JOB SUMMARY

A Patient Sitter supervises patients and provides compassionate care before and after treatment and during long inpatient stays. Patient sitters may also be required to transport patients. These professionals replace older forms of patient supervision like restraints and seclusion rooms. Patient sitters work in conjunction with the various patient care Managers, Directors, and Clinical Care Supervisor, House Supervisors, RNs, AND CNAs to ensure safety and companionship to help patients through challenging medical issues. The Patient Sitter will communicate patient safety needs by accurately documenting patient behaviors. The Patient Sitter’s work is reflective of CCH mission, vision and values.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Supervising patients care without distractions.
  • Maintaining a safe environment for patients.
  • Alerting nurses when patients need help or interventions.
  • Assisting patients with basic requests.
  • Transport patients to and from inpatient beds and other areas like therapy, surgery or radiology or to other facilities.
  • Refraining from performing medical procedures or any unauthorized actions.
  • Keeping patient information confidential.
  • Accurately documenting patient behaviors.
  • Active listening and communication of needs and concerns.
  • Ability to observe situations.
  • Ability to handle emotionally distressing situations.
  • Professional appearance and hygiene.
  • Ability to act calmly under pressure.
  • Ability to be on call, to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • May be required to work on other nursing units.
  • Must be free from governmental sanctions involving health care and/or financial practices.
  • Complies with the hospital’s Corporate Compliance Program including, but not limited to, the Code of Conduct, laws and regulations, and hospital policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned. This list is non-exhaustive.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education
    • High school graduate or GED.
  • Certification
    • CPR, Team Advanced and Restraint and First Aid.
  • Experience
    • None
  • Certifications required
    • See Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certification Policy and Certifications/Education Requirements Policy.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • The ability to maintain continuing education requirements and all certifications and licenses as required (e.g., ACLS, PALS, CPI, CPR).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills needed in dealing with nursing staff, physicians, patients, families, and other members of the health care team.
  • Able to think quickly, handle various projects simultaneously with attention to accuracy, prioritization, patient request, detail, memory, problem solving, reasoning, ability to memorize routine assignments, computer mnemonics, all with little or no supervision.
  • Ability to speak clearly to communicate with patients, families, physicians, and staff regarding patient’s condition, etc.
  • Analytical and reasoning skills with a high level of mental concentration and memory.
  • Ability to develop positive interactions and solve complex problems in a professional manner under stress with patients, patients’ families, physicians, and staff to effectively care for the patients.
  • Computer Knowledge including the ability to operate fax, computer, and copy machine to perform the duties of the position.
  • Must demonstrate and maintain current knowledge and skill in the following age groups:
    • Infant (Neonate to Age 1)
    • Pediatric (Age 1-11)
    • Adolescent (12-18)
    • Adult (19-64)
    • Geriatric (Age 65 and older)
