What are the responsibilities and job description for the Scale Attendant position at Catawba County Government?

Catawba County Utilities and Engineering Department is recruiting for a Scale Attendant. This position is located at the Blackburn Landfill. In this position, you will work in the Landfill Scales Operations assisting customers by weighing vehicles in and out, creating the weigh ticket, collecting for disposal, inspecting loads, and ensuring waste is disposed of in the appropriate bins, and Landfill rules and regulations are being followed. The work schedule includes a Monday – Friday day shift schedule with a rotating Saturday schedule and holiday hours.
- Operation of scale weighing system, weighing vehicles in and out which may be loaded or empty
- Assisting customers, collecting and accounting for cash and credit transactions
- Data entry, filing, maintaining, and updating of reports
- Handling of cash, petty cash, and make deposits
- Assisting customers in the Residential Drop Off Area to ensure waste is placed in the appropriate bins/boxes
- Updating and maintaining various forms and reports
- Answering phones
- Answering questions regarding waste disposal and recycling options
- Inspecting loads before customer leaves scale area
- Ensuring safety vests are used and safety procedures are followed
- Opening and closing scale area
- Keeping Scale Houses, Areas, and Residential Drop Off Area clean
- Re-weighing repeat customers’ vehicles every 45 days
- Job must be performed in a timely and orderly manner in spite of weather conditions, language/communication challenges, or any other unpredictable condition
- Work occurs both inside and outside
- High school graduation and one year of customer service/public service experience
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Excellent customer services skills with the ability to communicate tactfully and interact effectively with a variety of individuals
- Basic computer/data entry skills
- Ability to multitask and work in a fast paced environment
- High level attention to detail and accuracy in data entry/tracking/reporting
- Willing and able to work in environment where exposed to extreme cold or heat, high levels of noise, and exhaust from vehicles on scales
- This is considered light work, which requires the ability to lift up to 20 pounds. This position requires the ability to stand on your feet the majority of the day.
- Prior scale operations experience
- Weigh Master License
