Position Information

The Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) , Division of Urban Forestry , is hiring for one (1) Nursery Worker II position in Honolulu. Nursery Worker IIs supervise and participate in the propagation, cultivation, fertilization and care of plants in a nursery.

What You Will Do

• Perform landscaping and maintenance in planting strips, medians, islands, parks, bikeways, and other areas.
• Plant and maintain nurseries and beautification projects across the island.
• Prepare plant beds and soil mixes, including soil, compost, fertilizer, and other amendments.
• Maintain clean and safe facilities to reduce plant disease and safety hazards.
• Supervise daily work activities of assigned staff.
• Perform other related duties as needed.
  
  

Special Working Conditions

• Handle and apply chemicals, including working in treated areas.
• Work in remote locations without access to drinking water, restrooms, or electricity.
• Work after hours or weekends for pesticide application, special projects, emergencies, and callouts.
• Serve as a Disaster Response Worker during declared emergencies.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

At time of application, you must be a citizen, national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.

Training And Experience Requirement

Experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to show competence in the care and cultivation of plants, including the propagation of various plants.

Substitution: Successful completion of the AG149 Plant Propagation course from Windward Community College or similar plant propagation coursework from an accredited college or university may substitute for a portion of the required experience.

Education Verification : Education information must be listed clearly on your application. If available, p lease attach a legible copy of your Certificate of Professional Development from Windward Community College and/or official transcript to your application. As part of the hiring process, you may be asked to furnish documentation to verify your education to move forward for further consideration.

Applicable Skills Needed

• Knowledge of a variety of trees and plants, their care and propagation.
• Knowledge of practices, tools, equipment and materials used in nursery work.
• Knowledge of plant diseases and pests and effective methods of controlling them.
• Knowledge of various commercial fertilizers and their use.
• Ability to supervise the work of others.
• Ability to do grafting, air-layering and seed germination.
• Ability to identify various plants.
• Ability to recognize common plant diseases, insects and pests.
  
  

License And Certificate Requirement

Possession of an appropriate valid Hawaii State driver's license, as required.

The current vacancy may require the following licenses and certificates:

• Valid Hawaii driver's license (Type 3), prior to appointment.
• Pulmonary Function Test (PFT), prior to appointment.
• Hearing Conservation Program (HCP) Test, prior to appointment.
• Department of Transportation Medical Examiner's certificate, prior to appointment.
• First Aid/CPR/AED certificates, prior to completion of probation.
• Commercial driver's license (Class A), prior to completion of probation.
• Certificate for Commercial Applicators of Restricted Pesticides, prior to completion of probation.
• Forklift certification, prior to completion of probation.
  
  

NOTE: Some of the above certificates are obtained during the pre-employment medical evaluation process. Any required licenses and certificates must be obtained by the time indicated above and maintained throughout the course of employment in the position.
