What are the responsibilities and job description for the Utilities Department Internship Water & Wastewater Treatment Facilities position at City of Appleton?
This is a technical internship position responsible for supporting a wide variety of day-to-day operations and maintenance activities at the Appleton Wastewater Treatment Plant and Appleton Water Treatment Facility (AWTF). Intern duties include:
The Intern shall report to the Operations Manager of the Utilities Department facility where work is assigned.
Knowledge applied in this position includes but is not limited to:
- Shadowing and assisting with the responsibilities of the Wastewater Operator, Solids Operator, Water Treatment Operator Maintenance Specialist II, Relief Operators, Instrument and Control Systems Technician, Master Electrician, and/or Laboratory Technician.
- Shadowing and assisting the Environmental Programs Coordinator with soil sampling, pretreatment facility inspections, and other tasks (other tasks could include dental amalgam inspections, Hg, SWPPP, etc.).
- As directed, assist mechanical and instrumentation staff in corrective maintenance of equipment and systems.
- Perform plant equipment preventative maintenance including tank and equipment cleaning.
- Performing laboratory technician assistance on a variety of process sampling and analyses, including providing database and monitoring support as needed.
- General operational duties including process investigations and custodial duties.
- Assists with administrative work as needed.
The Intern shall report to the Operations Manager of the Utilities Department facility where work is assigned.
- Assist Relief Workers on an as-needed basis with a variety of job duties related to facility maintenance.
- As directed performs sampling and analytical testing at various stages of treatment.
- Performs off-site soil testing and compost monitoring; maintains field data logs on biosolids compost and communicate compost process status with the Environmental Programs Coordinator as directed.
- Maintains clean work area and associated equipment.
- Assist Administrative Assistant with administrative responsibilities.
- Associates or bachelors degree program with a focus on science or environmental studies.
- Regular punctual and predictable attendance.
- A valid Wisconsin driver license
- At least eighteen years of age.
Knowledge applied in this position includes but is not limited to:
- Wastewater and/or drinking water treatment plant operations and processes.
- Mechanical systems including large capacity pumps, engines, drives, and control mechanisms.
- State and Federal regulation governing operation of wastewater and/or drinking water treatment plants.
- Work independently with minor supervision.
- Read engineering drawing and utilize operations and maintenance manuals.
- Understand and follow oral or written instructions.
- Maintain effective relations with other employees and deal with the public in a courteous and tactful manner.
- Withstand various weather conditions, fumes, odors, and dust generally associated with wastewater and drinking water treatment processes.
- Perform tasks which require frequent standing, climbing, reaching, squatting, bending, pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying.
- Perform all duties in a safe manner consistent with department and city safety policies and procedures.
