Job Description

The City of Avondale has an opportunity for a Street Maintenance Worker II to join the Public Works Department.

Operates and maintains assorted equipment and machinery including tractors, water trucks, loaders, backhoes, dump trucks, and other heavy equipment for daily assignments and services. Assignments include maintaining and repairing City roadways, sidewalks, right-of-ways, and other infrastructure. General laboring will be required. After-hours on-call work, as well as occasional night and weekend hours, are required. Works with other divisions/departments and performs related duties as required.

Essential Functions

Maintains roadways by cleaning away debris and waste, repairing potholes, crack sealing, and road patching with hot asphalt. Works closely with crew members to complete tasks directed by Team Lead and/or Supervisor. Operates water trucks, dump trucks, loaders, backhoes, street sweepers, and other heavy equipment as needed. Performs maintenance by cleaning and grading vacant lots, shoulders, retention basins, and alleys.

Maintains right-of-ways by repairing guard rails, fencing, sidewalks, curb and gutter, and handicap ramps. Other activities include chopping weeds, trimming trees and shrubs, cleaning litter, cleaning storm drains, and spreading aggregate and landscape DG rock.

Performs maintenance on heavy equipment including tractors, water trucks, street sweepers, dump trucks, loaders, backhoes, and other equipment.

Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspections. Inspects and maintains vehicles using knowledge of DOT rules and regulations. Performs vehicle/equipment spot checks, checks all fluids, greases all moving parts, and fuels equipment. Communicates and works closely with fleet maintenance personnel to ensure all equipment is safe and in working order.

Follows all safety rules and regulations and keeps all equipment and work areas in a safe operating condition. Performs any maintenance and repairs to equipment and tools within the scope of authority and following all safety regulations and procedures. Notifies supervisor of safety hazards, equipment problems, and emergencies.

Assists with the set up of work zones and traffic control zones to minimize the risk of accidents and enhance the safety of work crews; assists with traffic flagging as needed.

Completes daily work logs and prepares paperwork necessary for daily operations.

Assists other departments by repairing damage to public property, including repairing chain links, block fences, and pouring concrete. Performs other duties as assigned to support the operations of the Public Works Department.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED equivalency required.

A minimum of one (1) year of experience in equipment operation in construction or maintenance type of work.

Valid Arizona Class A CDL Driver's License and a current DOT physical examination certificate at the time of hire. Tanker endorsement must be obtained within six (6) months of the hire date.

Ability to obtain an Arizona Department of Agriculture Ornamental and Turf Applicator Certification and Right of Way Applicator Certification within twenty-four (24) months of hire.

Ability to obtain Work Zone Traffic Control Certification and become a Certified Flagger within twelve (12) months of hire.

Supplemental Information

Work requires the ability to read signs, maps, reports, work orders, logs, and instructions.

Work requires the ability to perform general math calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Work requires the ability to write work orders, reports, and logs.

Requires the ability to properly manage time and assigned city resources.

Work involves choices of action within limits set by standard practices and procedures. Professional judgment is required to apply the proper course of action.

The incumbents in this position may contact others within the organization. These contacts may involve similar work units or departments within the City. The employee must maintain regular attendance. The ability to work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner is required.
