What are the responsibilities and job description for the Associate Engineer position at City of Avondale?

The City of Avondale has an opportunity for an Associate Engineer with the Engineering Department. This is a FLSA exempt, full-time position with benefits. 

This recruitment will remain open until filled. 
The first review of applications will be on Monday, March 18, 2024, and weekly thereafter.


Hiring Range: $83,045.00 - $103,806.00

Salary range is the entire compensation range for the position classification.
Hiring range is an estimate of the compensation amount for the selected candidate. The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including skills, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, and/or training.


This position will provide engineering support, assistance, and reporting on a wide variety of engineering and architectural projects; support senior staff on the completion of various types of civil infrastructure, including but not limited to capital improvement projects, traffic engineering facilities, private development projects, plan review, and other types of development, utility/telecommunication, and infrastructure improvements; and provide customer service to residents, business owners, developers, and engineers.Supports project development by reviewing and approving engineering plans and reports for compliance with City design and construction standards, reviewing traffic-related documents, managing projects as directed, and inspecting construction project sites.
 
Plans, coordinates, and manages capital projects and the work of outside consultants. Develops project scopes, scheduling designs, and coordinates construction. Assists staff with the procurement of design, construction services, right-of-way, and easement dedications.
 
Implements and revises division policies, guidelines, and construction specifications. Identifies and processes easement and right-of-way acquisitions for developers and City projects.
 
Provides information, recommendations, and general information to developers, engineers, and the public by responding to various concerns and complaints from residents and local business owners.
 
Prepares and recommends proposals, bid packages, approvals, easements, contract awards, notices, submittals, scopes, schedules, and budgets.
 
Reviews and provides council reports and presentations.
 
Conducts and attends meetings with owners, developers, architects, and engineers relating to design expectations and engineering requirements for public and private development.A Bachelor’s Degree in a related field is required.
 
Two (2) years of project management, public works engineering, civil plan review, or design experience.
 
Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certification is required.
 
Proficiency with AutoCAD Civil3D, plan review, construction site inspection, and project management systems preferred.
 
A valid Arizona Operator’s Driver License or the ability to obtain one upon hire.Work requires the ability to read construction plans and specifications, county, state, and federal regulations, legal documents and descriptions, contracts, and engineering reports.
 
Work requires the ability to perform general math calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, as well as various algebraic, geometric, trigonometric, and calculus calculations.
 
Work requires the ability to write technical and quantitative documents, engineering design guidelines, construction specs, policies, and procedures.
 
Responsibilities include managing scope, schedule, construction, and budget on capital improvement projects while working with professional staff including engineers, architects, and engineering inspectors.
 
The incumbent prepares documents and researches to justify language used in documents for a unit of a department and may recommend budget allocations.
 
Work requires supervising and monitoring the performance of consultants. Supervision of internal staff may be required at times.
 
Analyzing and evaluating many complex variables. Citywide policies, procedures, or precedents are developed and/or recommended. Deals with civil engineering principles. Provides plan and specification clarification.
 
The incumbent will collaborate with others in the organization on decision-making or approvals and will work with individuals outside the City who may belong to professional or peer organizations. The employee will operate with various state and federal agencies. Meetings and discussions may be conducted with customers, developers, contractors, and design engineers to resolve specific engineering issues.
 
Employee must maintain regular attendance. Ability to work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.
