Temporary Part Time – NATURAL RESOURCES EDUCATION SPECIALIST

OPERATIONS DIVISION

DUTIES:

Provides environmental educational programs to public.

· Develops and facilitates environmental education programs for all ages.

· Collaborates with administrators and teachers to set a class schedule both in city parks and schools.

· Coordinates all developed programs to the Indiana science and math education standards.

· Researches and submits applications for education grant funding from multiple sources.

· Partners with other Parks and Rec Divisions or other community/government agencies to expand opportunities.

· Facilitates general community programs as advertised in the Parks and Recreation Program Guide.

· Assists with water quality monitoring and facilitates Adopt-A-Stream program.

· Reports regularly to the Natural Resources Coordinator on program success or improvements.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

Ecological systems and natural resource management knowledge a must. Experience teaching and facilitating students of all age levels, but focus on elementary through high school age groups. Ability to provide hands-on educational opportunities teaching the value of both community and the environment.

· Facilitation experience in camp or school system.

· Knowledge of forest, prairie, riparian and lake ecosystems.

· Must be self-motivated, and have the ability to interact and work well with the public and other employees.

· Must be reliable, punctual, have the ability to follow oral and written direction, and be capable of facilitating to multiple user groups and education levels.

· Valid Indiana driver’s license. Good driving record.

RESPONSIBILITY:

Employee is responsible for providing educational opportunities to the community. Develops environmental education programs appropriate for multiple age-levels, from kindergarten to adult, and provides accompanying Indiana State Education Standards for the appropriate subject areas, primarily science and math.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:

Must be in good physical condition. Moderate to strenuous physical effort is exerted by the employee in the field and on trails. Ability to hike and work in moderately difficult terrain for extended periods. Employee must be physically capable of lifting weights in excess of 50 pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Employee performs duties in and out of doors, in varying weather conditions, and is periodically exposed to hazards in relatively remote work sites. Safety precautions used at all times to avoid injury.

HOURS:

15-30 hours per week. Tuesday and Thursday availability is required. Hours vary with season and program offerings. Some weekends required. Employees under age eighteen are subject to restrictions on both hours and prohibited occupations.

SALARY:

$18.77 per hour.
