Job Description
Public Works Operations is seeking a highly motivated individual to perform departmental jobsite safety inspections and incident (accident/injury/cut lines) safety investigations, provide training, assist in mitigating hazardous materials incidents, and enforce applicable codes and regulations. Responsibilities include:
  • Perform daily jobsite safety inspections and enter information into Maximo (asset management system). Document safety violations on safety checklist.
  • Perform safety investigations for incidents (accidents/injuries/cut lines). Conduct safety training classes including new employee safety orientation, VDOT flagging certification, Defensive Driving, and substance abuse avoidance.
  • Assist with city-wide hazardous materials spills in the right of way, verifying spills types and cleanup requirements. Maintain non-hazardous materials temporary storage site at the Greenbrier Yard. Perform monthly OSHA yard inspections. Monitor fire extinguishers and eye wash stations.
  • Provide backup support for Safety Inspector 2. Attend Safety Review Board hearings as safety expert when needed. Conduct safety meetings as directed.


Requires comprehensive knowledge of principles/practices related to construction/industrial safety; knowledge of Federal/State laws & safety regulations; knowledge of the duties, responsibility & equipment used in municipal employment. Ability to communicate effectively; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees. Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office software. Ability to assist in identification and containment of hazardous materials. Ability to set up safety work zone, direct traffic, & work with divisions. Some knowledge of Virginia Worker’s Compensation rules and regulations. Some knowledge of Public Works’ type injuries. Requires occasional availability after-hours.

Required Qualifications
VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT: Requires high school diploma or GED and any combination of education and experience equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college education in occupational safety or a closely related field.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of one year of full-time equivalent experience.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: Requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is in compliance with City Driving Standards. Depending on operational needs, a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B or higher may be required within 12 months of start date.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

Preferred Qualifications
Safety related training with some OSHA certifications preferred.
