What are the responsibilities and job description for the 2026 Summer/Seasonal Water Department Summer Intern position at City of De Pere?

Performs skilled work relating to the maintenance and repair of the City's water distribution system, buildings and grounds, and other facilities.

Work Schedule: Hours are normally Monday through Thursday, 5:30 am to 4:00 pm (Four - 10 hour days for 40 hours per week).

  • Operate maintenance equipment necessary to perform the job such as a mechanical valve turner, line trimmer, lawn mower, and weed sprayer.
  • Perform daily, routine maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
  • Maintenance of water mains, service valves, and hydrants.
  • Maintenance of metering stations, pumping stations, reservoirs, and elevated towers.
  • Maintenance, service, and repair of pumps and associated equipment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Ability to read and understand technical information. Ability to accurately maintain simple clerical records and perform simple arithmetic computations. Ability to drive a light pickup truck with trailer. Ability to follow oral and written instructions and work independently. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with business representatives, elected officials, department heads, the general public, and other City employees with courtesy and tact. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the public. Ability to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions and to work on construction sites. Maintain prompt, predictable and reliable attendance. Maintain the ability to lawfully operate a motor vehicle.

Requirements

Skill in the safe and efficient operation of the tools and equipment necessary to perform the job as well as tools used in performing electrical, plumbing and mechanic repairs and installations. Skill in the operation of modern office equipment, computer equipment, and Microsoft Office Suite.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Working toward a college degree in a water related field.
  • Valid unencumbered Wisconsin Driver's License and safe driving record.

A combination of education and experience may be considered.

Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, crawl, twist, climb, push, pull, and lift, distinguish color, and wear protective apparel; exposed to all weather elements including heat and cold, noise, outdoors, vibration, heights, confining work space, chemicals, mechanical hazards, electrical hazards, and traffic hazards; ability to travel to different sites and locations.
