Increases to: $27.02/hour after six months

This hands-on position involves fueling, cleaning, and performing routine maintenance on city vehicles, as well as assisting mechanics and handling general labor tasks at the maintenance facility. This position works an overnight schedule from 5:30 p.m. to 2:00 a.m., Thursday through Monday, including weekends and holidays. Days off are Tuesday and Wednesday.

  • Vehicle Cleaning and Maintenance: Clean city vehicles, including buses, cutaways, vans, support vehicles, and other assets as assigned. Perform preventive maintenance tasks on City vehicles and equipment.
  • Fueling and Fluid Checks: Fuel city vehicles and check fluid levels for buses, cutaways, vans, support vehicles, and other assets as assigned.
  • Assistance and General Labor: Assist Transit Fleet Mechanics as needed. Perform general labor tasks at the transit fleet maintenance facility.
  • Reporting and Documentation: Prepare and maintain standard repair and maintenance work reports.

Technical Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of practices, procedures, materials, and equipment used in transit fleet maintenance and repair work.
  • Knowledge of standard manual work tools.

Communication and Interpersonal Skills:

  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to interact effectively with the public, including in challenging situations.

Physical Abilities:

  • Physical strength and agility to perform strenuous manual tasks for extended periods.
  • Capability to work under adverse weather conditions.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience in custodial or general laborer work or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Licensing Requirements:

  • Possess, or obtain with six months, a valid Illinois Class "B" Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

Health and Safety Compliance:

  • Ability to pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment and random Federal Transit Administration (FTA) drug and alcohol testing.

Sponsorship for Employment

The City of Decatur does not provide sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H-1B). To be considered for regular employment with City of Decatur, applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a continuous basis.Examination Process

The examination process will consist of the components listed below. The combination of the written examination and oral interview will constitute 100% of the final examination score.

  • Written Examination Applicants will be required to take a written examination tailored to this position. Applicants are required to score at least 70.00%.
  • Oral Interview Applicants passing the written test must pass an oral interview with a minimum score of 70.00%.
  • Veteran Points Applicants passing the written test and oral interview may be eligible to receive 5.00 veteran preference points added to their final examination score.
  • Seniority Points Applicable persons passing the written test and oral interview will receive 0.50 seniority preference points for each full year of continuous City of Decatur AFSCME service. A maximum of 10.0 points may be added to the final examination score.

Residency

The Transit Utility Worker position is covered under the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) collective bargaining agreement. AFSCME employees shall reside within 50 miles of the corporate limits of City of Decatur. An appointee may reside outside said limits but must comply no later than 90 days after the completion of the probationary period.
