What are the responsibilities and job description for the Transit Service Technician position at City of Dubuque?

Diagnoses, adjusts, repairs, or overhauls automotive and heavy equipment vehicles; performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks in servicing equipment and assisting mechanics in various mechanical repair duties; performs work to keep the transportation buildings in repair; and performs other duties as assigned. Duties may involve pipe fitting; HVAC maintenance; insulating; welding; machining; carpentry; repairing electrical or mechanical equipment; installing, aligning, and balancing new equipment; and repairing buildings, floors, or stairs. 

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASSWork in this class involves performing a variety of semi-skilled tasks in servicing automotive and heavy equipment and assisting mechanics in a variety of mechanical repair duties. Driving and maneuvering heavy equipment is also required. Work is performed according to general or specific instructions from the supervisor who inspects work while in progress and upon completion.  

  • Perform and assist in maintaining, repairing and servicing automotive and heavy equipment. 
  • Check tires, oil, lubricants, water levels, lights and fuel in vehicles. 
  • Record information about parts, materials or repair procedures.
  • Inspect vehicles to determine overall condition; gas systems or components for leaks or other potential hazards; and mechanical components of vehicles for problems.
  • Operate transportation equipment to demonstrate function or malfunction.
  • Order materials, supplies and equipment.
  • Test mechanical systems, electrical circuit and components to ensure proper functioning.
  • Adjust equipment to ensure optimal performance; and vehicle components according to specifications.
  • Replace worn, damaged, or defective mechanical parts.
  • Repair tires; non-engine automotive and vehicle components; worn, damaged, or defective mechanical parts; defective engines or engine components; electrical circuit and wiring; and structural components.
  • Read work orders or descriptions of problems to assess repairs or modifications needed; and technical information to perform maintenance or repairs.
  • Confer with coworkers to coordinate work activities; and with users to assess problems.
  • Estimate costs for labor or materials.
  • Align equipment or machinery.
  • Disassemble equipment for maintenance or repair, or to inspect for deficiencies.
  • Reassemble equipment after repair.
  • Service vehicles to maintain functionality; green vehicles to make repairs or maintain good working order; heating, ventilation or air-conditioning (HVAC) systems or components.
  • Paint surfaces. 
  • Plan work procedures.
  • Clean interior and exterior of vehicles; and work areas.
  • Rebuild parts or components.
  • Rewire electrical or electronic systems.
  • Troubleshoot equipment and systems operation problems.
  • Install tires and chains on vehicles; vehicle parts or accessories; electrical components, equipment, and systems; energy-efficient heating, ventilation, or air conditioning (HVAC) equipment; and insulation in equipment and structures.
  • Maintain time and other records; and bus shelters and bus stops groundskeeping duties. 
  • Drive and move vehicles and equipment from place to place and perform bus exchanges on routes. 
  • Report defective parts or equipment on vehicles. 
  • Remove snow.
  • Balance wheels.
  • Perform custodial duties in the interior and exterior of the maintenance facility and other transit facilities, including snow removal and grass cutting around the facilities.
  • Operate a variety of hand and power tools.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Mechanical - Knowledge of automotive and heavy equipment machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Repairing - Repairing machines or systems using the right tools.
  • Troubleshooting - Figuring out what is causing equipment, machines, wiring, or computer programs to not work.
  • Operations Monitoring - Watching gauges, dials, or display screens to make sure a machine is working.
  • Critical Thinking - Thinking about the pros and cons of different ways to solve a problem.
  • Equipment Maintenance - Planning and doing the basic maintenance on equipment.
  • Manual and Finger Dexterity - Holding or moving items with your hands and putting together small parts with your fingers.
  • Control Precision - Quickly changing the controls of a machine, bus, car, or truck.
  • Arm-Hand Steadiness - Keeping your arm or hand steady.
  • Extent Flexibility - Bending, stretching, twisting, or reaching with your body, arms, and/or legs.
  • Visualization - Imagining how something will look after it is moved around or changed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • High School diploma or its equivalent; 
  • Automotive technician certification or similar training; 
  • Or any equivalent combination of experience and training.        
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License with air brake and passenger endorsement.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and heavy equipment.

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT: Employee shall establish their principal place of residence within thirty (30) miles of the corporate limits of the city of Dubuque as soon as practicable after appointment, but within two years of appointment.
