About this Position
The Cemetery’s mission is to serve the public with their interment needs and provide landscape maintenance for 50 acres of cemetery grounds. The Cemetery Maintenance Worker I will work closely with other employees to maintain the Gracelawn Cemetery grounds and gravesites. They will perform heavy manual labor, general construction, and other related servicing tasks to maintain the grounds and assist with the preparation of grave sites under the direct supervision of the Cemetery Manager.
Gracelawn Cemetery employees operate with a 7:30 am-4:00 pm work schedule with frequent overtime.
Responsibilities
- Prepare grave sites for funerals, including setting grave frames, setting up the lowering device, and digging/closing the grave space
- Prepare outdoor areas for funerals, including putting up the tent and placing chairs & signs
- Plan grave plots by measuring and calculating grave areas after verifying plot size and location
- Set monuments & concrete footings
- Maintain a clean and clear outdoor space by disposing of debris, filling low areas with dirt, and removing snow
- Cultivate plant life by pruning foliage, planting flowers or shrubs, and applying fertilizer
- Operate and maintain hand tools, trucks, & equipment
- Assist Cemetery Manager with recording burial information, answering calls, and answering inquiries from the public
- Perform other related duties as required or assigned
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- Related experience and or training regarding outdoor maintenance work
- Knowledge of preventative equipment maintenance
- Experience in general cemetery operations (preferred)
- Valid Oklahoma Driver's License and a driving record acceptable to the City's insurance carrier
Necessary Skills
- Strong interpersonal communication skills
- Ability to work outdoors in all seasons
- Ability to safely operate a backhoe
- Ability and willingness to perform frequent overtime
- Ability to meet required physical standards of this position
- Ability to pass extensive background process and pre-employment drug, physical, and audio screenings
