Career opportunity in wastewater treatment with the City of Fredericksburg. We are looking for persons willing to start as operator training and current licensed wastewater operators. The City offers the potential to learn, grow, and start a career in wastewater, a $260 billion-dollar-a-year industry. No experience in wastewater is needed to begin as an Operator in Training. The City of Fredericksburg is embarking on upgrading and expanding the existing wastewater treatment plant. The City is looking for great people who want to be trained in wastewater operations and are ready for a career. The new upgraded and expanded wastewater treatment plant is expected to be completed in December of 2025. The new facility will be a modern 6 Million Gallons a Day (MGD) state-of-the-art facility.

The Operator or Operator in Training is a full-time position with benefits. The operators perform technical wastewater work; accountable for operating and maintaining machinery and pumps, processing and drawing wastewater samples for laboratory testing; adjusting feed rates and adding chemicals; and assisting with data entry and preparing monthly reports, and working with the plant System Control Data Acquisition (SCADA) process controls. The successful applicant will have an educational background equivalent to a high school diploma and the ability to obtain a Class 4 Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator license within six months of hire. The City will pay for and provide training guidance.

The facility is subject to stringent state/federal regulations. Additionally, a valid Virginia drivers’ license or ability to acquire within six (6) months is required. Background check and driving record check required.

The Wastewater Treatment Facility is currently a 24/7 operation with 12-hour shifts, 40 hours a week regular pay, plus overtime if needed. Operators are essential personnel and must work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays; a sample schedule and further details will be provided to candidates during the interview process. Candidates must have the ability to work frequently scheduled overtime. Most of the work is performed outdoors; some indoors, intermittent outside work in all weather conditions will be required.
