Custodian - Power Plant

NATURE OF WORK
This is manual custodial work involving cleaning and performing a variety of related tasks in and around various facilities. This position is assigned to the Power Plant.
Work is generally performed in accordance with established procedures and sanitary standards, with specific instructions provided on unusual problems. Employees in this class may also be responsible for opening and closing buildings and general assistance of a custodial nature in working with the public. Supervision is received from an administrative superior who checks work for maintenance of established standards of cleanliness and compliance with instructions.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The following examples of work are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive:
- Sweeps, mops, waxes, and polishes floors; washes walls, woodwork, windows and blinds; polishes brass and dusts furniture and other articles; empties wastebaskets.
- Cleans and disinfects drinking fountains, restroom fixtures and kitchen fixtures, restroom walls and mirrors; refills paper dispensers.
- Vacuums and shampoos carpets and upholstery; spot cleans when necessary.
- Changes light bulbs, starters and fuses; changes heating and air conditioning filters; paints interior and exterior surfaces; performs minor plumbing repairs.
- Performs other work as assigned.
- Knowledge of the use and care of cleaning equipment.
- Some knowledge of proper cleaning procedures and products.
- Ability to learn repetitive tasks quickly.
- Ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public.
Graduation from High School or equivalent GED; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the knowledge, abilities, and skills. Must be self-motivated to maintain cleaning standards, identify and clean items when required.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Employee must possess and maintain of a valid Nebraska Driver’s License when operating a vehicle.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Work is performed in an outdoor/indoor environment under varying weather conditions with temperatures ranging from below zero to above 100 degrees
- Some occasional exposure to fumes, high noise levels, chemicals, working at heights and in confined spaces, fall hazards, hazardous materials, dust, and paint
- Work may involve lifting, climbing, and carrying of equipment and materials up to 40-60 lbs
- Work will require the use of Personal Protective Equipment
- Other hazards that may be encountered are high traffic areas where trucks, loaders, and rail cars are moving and being loaded or unloaded
