Landscaper/Laborer

Duties and Responsibilities Work

· Performs raking, mowing, edging, lawn watering, seeding, and sprigging grass, spreading fertilizers, dispensing herbicides, raking, pruning, weeding, tilling and various other grounds maintenance duties

· Maintains trees, shrubs, and flower beds by planting, pruning, trimming, removing weeds, and safely applying appropriate herbicides

· Prepare planting beds and pots by amending soil with fertilizer.

· Keep plants watered

· Monitor and maintain plant health

· Assists in the maintenance of the city operated cemetery

· Minor repairs to park signs, benches and other equipment and facility properties.

· Performs various maintenance duties on equipment and facilities utilized

· Operates various types of assigned grounds maintenance equipment, tractor, mower, chain saw, edger, tiller, weed eater, and other small equipment as required

· Assist with setting up and breaking down for special events hosted by the City of Hamlet which may include working some nights and weekends.

· Must utilize and maintain personal protective equipment (PPE) and always follow safety procedures.

· Performs other related work as assigned

· Some knowledge of flowers, trees, and shrubs

· Some knowledge of the operation, care and maintenance of assigned equipment

· Skilled in the operation of assigned equipment

· Ability to work independently in the performance of duties

· Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

· Ability to operate assigned equipment effectively

· Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public

· Ability to operate a motor vehicle

Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally; and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently; and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Must possess visual acuity to operate grounds equipment and vehicles in a safe manner.

The employee is subject to working in outside environments including extreme hot and cold weather and work hazards including exposure to noise, smells, vibration, moving mechanical parts, fumes, dust, oils, and skin irritants.

Graduation from high school or GED equivalency and preferably some additional training in landscaping and horticulture operations. Some experience in landscaping, nursery, or other related grounds maintenance work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience

· Valid North Carolina driver’s license
