Building Codes Combination Inspector

The Building Codes Combination Inspector is a full-time position with benefits and a preferred hiring range of $20.95 - $24.09 per hour (equivalent to $43,576 - $50,107 annually); however, an exact salary will be dependent upon the selected candidate's qualifications and experience. You are the ideal candidate for this position if you have a desire to work both in the field and in an office environment while performing a variety of work related to inspections of all phases of building plans and construction.

As a Building Codes Combination Inspector, some of your duties may include:

• Performing residential and commercial electrical, mechanical, plumbing, building, and property maintenance inspections and re-inspections;
• Reading and interpreting building plans and specifications for compliance during inspections;
• Issuing correction notices and stop work orders, if necessary, when construction is not being completed in compliance with regulations (regarding methods and/or materials);
• Inspecting existing buildings for hazardous conditions, structural failures, or improper use;
• Receiving complaints in regard to both existing and new building or property maintenance code violations and managing enforcement difficulties in accordance with office policies, the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code (VUSBC), and/or through consultation with the Building Official or other supervisor;
• Testifying in court on code violation cases, as needed;
• Creating monthly reports of inspections performed;
• Writing property violation maintenance letters and recording documentation of inspection results in accordance with the VUSBC;
• Providing assistance and answering questions from private citizens, contractors, builders, and others and conferring with them concerning code compliance matters;
• Performing basic plan reviews to determine compliance with codes.

• High school diploma or GED supplemented by coursework in a variety of inspection specialties or related field and considerable (3-5 years) experience in one or more of the building construction trades. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be used to meet this requirement.
• Valid driver's license.
• Availability to be on-call for off-hours emergency response and participate in a rotating, stand-by work program.
• Bilingual abilities are preferred but not required for consideration.

Special Requirements: 

• Certification from the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development as a Combination Residential Inspector or the ability to obtain this certification within eighteen (18) months of hire date;
• Certification from the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development as a Combination Commercial Inspector or the ability to obtain the certification within thirty-six (36) months of hire date;
• Certification from the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development as a Property Maintenance Inspector or the ability to obtain the certification within thirty-six (36) months of hire date.

The selected candidate for this position will be subject to the following screenings and must receive satisfactory results:

• DMV record review; and
• Criminal background check.
