General Overview of Position
The City of Kenosha is accepting applications for two (2) Head Lifeguard Supervisors to supervise the daily operations and staff at the City's two public pools (located at Washington Park and Anderson Park) from June to August based on an operating schedule set by the Public Works Department (the pools are tentatively scheduled to open from June 13, 2023 to August 20, 2023 for the season). These supervisors work a full-time schedule of 55 hours per week (Tuesdays - Sundays), weather and water quality conditions permitting, and are required to work evenings and weekends. Work may be scheduled to work between the two pool locations.
Please note that City employees (including seasonal employees) may only be employed in one classification at any one given time.
Example of Duties & Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develops work and assignment schedules with pool staff. Reviews work schedules and time records for all personnel.
- Observes lifeguard practices to ensure enforcement of laws and policies.
- Reviews and evaluates employees' job performance.
- Develops and manages aquatic programs.
- Coordinates business operations and instructs a variety of aquatic skills in the process of managing and operating assigned facility.
- Develops in-service training for lifeguards.
- Responsible for maintaining cleanliness of pool area and locker rooms.
- Oversees and manages collection of pool revenues including the balancing of monies collected.
- Completes and maintains accurate records and reports as required.
- Performs other work as required.
Requirements
Required Education/Experience/Training:
- 18 years of age or older.
- High school diploma, GED or HSED.
- Certified in American Red Cross Lifeguard training, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and Standard First Aid.
- Two years (post high school) experience managing or assisting in the management of an aquatic facility.
Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Ability to evaluate, exercise sound judgment and act properly and quickly in a variety of situations, including emergencies. Possess willingness to assume personal responsibility for maintaining a safe working environment.
- Knowledge of state and local laws pertaining to a municipal swimming pool operation.
- Skill in swimming (see Physical Requirements below).
- Skill and knowledge of official procedures related to lifeguarding, CPR and first aid.
- Ability to interact effectively with a wide variety of patrons of differing personalities and temperament.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English both orally and in writing.
- Ability to complete and maintain accurate records and reports.
- Knowledge of basic math or accounting to include the ability to account for and balance monies collected.
- Ability to establish goals.
- Ability to effectively supervise, lead, motivate and promote the development of pool staff toward these goals.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, superiors and the general public.
- Strong customer service skills.
- Ability to handle reasonably necessary stress.
Physical Requirements:
- Task may involve regular, and at times sustained, standing or sitting.
- Task may involve walking over rough or uneven surfaces, bending, stooping, and lifting or carrying moderately heavy (20-50 pound) items and occasionally very heavy (100 pounds or over) items.
- Must pass a swimming ability test which includes: retrieving a 10 lb. brick from 10-foot depth and swimming 500 yards using the front crawl and breast stroke (begins with 200 yards of front crawl, then 100 yards of breast stroke, and 200 yards of either stroke or a combination of both).
