What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lifeguard position at City of Kenosha?

The City of Kenosha is accepting applications for Lifeguards to work at the City's two public pools (located at Washington Park and Anderson Park) from June to August based on an operating schedule set by the Parks Department. Lifeguards can work a full-time schedule Tuesdays through Sundays from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. weather and water conditions permitting.  Lifeguards may be scheduled to work between the two pool locations.

The Parks Department will be offering Red Cross Lifeguard Certification courses to applicants that pass minimum qualifications at no cost on the following dates:

  • June 19-21 from 8:00 am - 3:00 pm daily (deadline to register is June 17th)
  • June 25-28 from 11:00 am - 4:00 pm daily (deadline to register is June 19th)
Applicants should be prepared to complete 7 hours of online course work prior to the course dates above.

  • Supervise swimming area to maintain order and protect swimmers from accidents or drowning.
  • Enforce swimming rules and regulations.
  • Maintain and clean pools and surrounding areas.
  • May perform concession attendant duties as needed.
  • Perform other related work as required.

Education/Training/Other Requirements:
  • Applicants must possess current lifeguard certification from the American Red Cross or Ellis & Associates with First Aid and CPR Certification by the time of hire on June 17, 2024 (this is when pools are tentatively scheduled to open for the season).
  • Applicants not currently certified can call the Parks Department at 262-653-4080 for information on certification options.  
  • Must be 16 years of age or older by June 17, 2024 (this is when pools are tentatively scheduled to open for the season). 
  • Must be able to pass a post-offer drug screen which requires a parent or legal guardian to accompany and provide permission to the minor at the test collection site.
  • Applicants the age of 18 years or older (or those who turn 18 prior to the start of the pool season) may be subject to a criminal background check.
Knowledge, Abilities & Skills Required: 
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to enforce pool rules in an effective and appropriate manner.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, superiors and the general public.
  • Ability to handle a reasonable amount of stress.
Environmental Requirements:
  • Work is performed outdoors and may be performed in adverse weather conditions (i.e. heat, cold, exposure to the sun, etc.) The Parks Department may close the pools in the event of extreme weather or environmental conditions.
Physical Requirements:
  • Task may involve regular, and at times sustained, standing or sitting. 
  • Task may involve walking over rough or uneven surfaces, bending, stooping, and lifting or carrying moderately heavy (20-50 pound) items and occasionally very heavy (100 pounds or over) items.
  • Must pass a swimming ability test
    • Swim 300 yards, continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both, but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used.
    • Tread water for 2 minutes, using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under their armpits.
    • Complete a timed event within 1 minute and 40 seconds: Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. Swim goggles are not allowed. Surface dive, feet-first or headfirst, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface in order to breathe (or to get a breath). Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
Sensory Requirements:
  • Work requires perception and discrimination in the sensory areas of: visual, color, sound, odor, depth, and texture.
  • Work requires the ability to communicate verbally.
Applicants interested in becoming a lifeguard must obtain certification from the American Red Cross and/or Ellis with First Aid/CPR Certification in order to qualify for employment. Previous employees are not guaranteed rehire and are required to complete an online application for consideration. The City will analyze the applicant's education, training and experience. Written, oral and/or proficiency exams may be required to establish eligibility. The City of Kenosha reserves the right to further evaluate only those applicants who best meet the needs of the City.
