What are the responsibilities and job description for the Wastewater Maintenance Worker 400 position at City of Lansing?

The City of Lansing is seeking to fill a full-time Wastewater Maintenance Worker 400 position in one of the largest wastewater facilities in Michigan that is run with state-of-the art technology. This is a great opportunity for individuals to apply their knowledge and skillset to the maintenance and operation of the wastewater treatment plant, pump stations, and lawn, grounds, and landscaping tasks. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS & TRAINING: 
  • Must possess and maintain a valid State of Michigan Commercial Driver’s License, Group B with Air brake and N (tank) endorsement including the DOT mandated medical card, HIGHLY preferred OR must be able to obtain a CDL B with N (tank) endorsement AND DOT medical card within 90 days from date of hire, or will be terminated.
  • May be subject to emergency call-in and shift work as required.
IDEAL CANDIDATES WILL POSSESS THE FOLLOWING:   
  • High School Diploma or GED (college level coursework in an industrial or mechanical field of study, preferred); AND
  • Two (2) years of experience in the following:
    • The operation and repair of water or wastewater plant equipment OR
    • In industrial equipment maintenance OR 
    • Other work that requires plumbing and mechanical maintenance ability. 
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.  
ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS INLCUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:  
  • Cleans, repairs, and services a variety of wastewater plant and field operation equipment including engines, motors, boilers, feed machines, compressors, filters and pumps. Fabricates parts and rebuilds equipment.
  • Performs preventative maintenance on equipment as scheduled.
  • Performs pipefitting tasks such as cutting and threading pipes, replacing pipe sections, fittings, valves, and wraps.
  • Drives/operates several different styles and size trucks to position and transport grit, scum and sludge containers.
  • Removes snow and ice from steps, sidewalks, landings and all plant areas.  Also plows snow from Plant and Pump Station entrances, roads, and parking areas.
  • Performs a wide range of building maintenance duties such as replacing windows, installing doors, repairing door closures, and may make minor concrete repairs to sidewalks and steps.
Post-Hire Requirements:
  • Selected candidate(s) will be offered as a condition of employment to participate in an employer paid Hepatitis B inoculation program.
  • Must complete and pass MDOT Drug & Alcohol Training.
  • Must pass and maintain Confined Space Training and Certification.
  • Must pass and maintain Powered Industrial Truck and Aerial Work Platform Training and Certifications.

Wastewater Trainee Program (For internal applicants ONLY): Per Appendix I, Memorandum of Understanding between the City and the Union establishing the Wastewater Trainee Program, it states: should no qualified UAW applicants accept the position, the position classification will revert to Wastewater Trainee 300 (Salary Range: $39,333.09-$48,687.39). Selection will be based on the most senior qualified UAW employee who meets the minimum requirements and passes the required testing for this program which are as follows:
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Possess a satisfactory work performance record and attendance record.  An applicant may not have been issued any disciplinary actions for the two year period prior to the date of the selection for placement and may not have any unsatisfactory ratings on the last performance evaluation.
  • Must possess the physical capabilities to perform the essential duties of the trainee position with or without reasonable accommodation.  The City shall make this determination.
  • Applicants meeting the above criteria must also take and satisfactorily complete a mechanical aptitude assessment inventory, which shall be administered by the Department of Human Resources.
