What are the responsibilities and job description for the Streets Maintenance Worker position at City of Las Cruces?
Performs manual tasks in the construction and/or maintenance of streets, walkways, storm drains and public right of way; may assist with the routine maintenance of equipment, tools and machinery; may be involved in concrete construction.
WORK SITUATION FACTORS
Position requires overtime, on-call, extended hours, competing demands, performing multiple tasks, working to deadlines, occasional work beyond normal business hours, and responding to customer issues. Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity of services. Position is subject to drug testing in accordance with applicable State and Federal regulations and City of Las Cruces policies.
PHYSICAL FACTORS
Requires moderate physical effort; balancing, crouching, kneeling, squatting, bending and stooping; lifting and carrying items weighing up to 70 pounds; ability to communicate via a two-way communication device; maintain alertness to traffic hazards; writing and use of standard hand tools.
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS
Works outside with exposure to all weather conditions; exposure to traffic, noise, fumes, dust, dirt, danger of infection, open manholes and potential street cave-in; safety shoes are required.

This position is graded at BC04.
- Digs and fills holes; patches cuts and holes on streets; repairs and cleans storm drains.
- Services, repairs and maintains small engines and equipment; performs minor welding repairs.
- Performs maintenance and repair of chain link fencing, guardrails and wood bollards; cleans drainage channels and irrigation ditches.
- Removes broken concrete; sets concrete forms; pours concrete into formed areas; participates in concrete finishing; strips forms; back fills open areas; replaces landscaping; performs general clean-up.
- Picks up debris from roadways and right of way locations; cleans debris from drain gates; cleans drainage channels and irrigation ditches.
- Loads trucks; dumps debris.
- Performs maintenance and repair of buildings and facilities.
- May assist with the set up traffic control devices.
- Checks lift stations for proper operation and flood control.
- May maintain inventory of materials, tools and equipment, issues/checks out tools and equipment to crews; may orders materials, tools and equipment for work crews; maintains records of tools and equipment.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS
Valid driver’s license is required. Position requires an acceptable driving record in accordance with City policy.
Basic knowledge of: Operations, services and activities of a building/street maintenance program; construction practices; equipment, tools, materials, and methods of assigned specialty area; occupational hazards and related safety precautions.
Ability to: Perform basic reading and writing; perform basic mathematical calculations; attain precise standards; use power and hand tools and equipment; maintain equipment; adhere to safe work practices.
Skills in: Using a variety of hand and power tools.
