The purpose of this job is to conduct inspections of new and remodeled residential and/or commercial buildings to ensure compliance with City building codes, ordinances and inspection processes. Coordinates inspections with contractors and advises citizens and contractors of building procedures and city policies.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Performs residential and light commercial building, mechanical, electrical and plumbing inspections to ensure that new construction, alterations, and repairs comply with building codes, ordinances, zoning regulations, and contract specifications.
Monitors the status of construction inspection activities and keeps track of permits issued.
Notifies the construction contractor, superintendent, or supervisor when violations of building codes or ordinances are identified.
Investigates new construction or alterations being done without proper permits and issue "stop work orders".
Performs related work as required.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Must be able to provide services for the benefit of the general public during emergency situations that threaten the safety of League City's citizens, and that, City employees must be able to work immediately before, during, or after an emergency.
Any combination of experience, certification and education which provide the applicant with the level of required knowledge and abilities will be considered.
BUILDING INSPECTOR I
- High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED)
- Valid Class "C" Texas driver's license
Preferred:
One year of experience as a building inspector
BUILDING INSPECTOR II
- High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED)
Required Licenses or Certifications
- Valid Class "C" Texas driver's license
- Must possess 3 current ICC Certifications: Residential Building, Mechanical and Electrical
Preferred:
Three years of experience as a building inspector
BUILDING INSPECTOR Ill
- High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED)
Required Licenses or Certifications
- Valid Class "C" Texas driver's license
- Must possess current State of Texas Plumbing Inspector License
- Must possess all 3 current Residential ICC Certifications
- Must possess all 3 Commercial ICC Certifications in Building, Mechanical and Electrical
Preferred:
Five years of experience as a building inspector

Knowledge of:
International Residential, Commercial Codes, City Ordinances and Building Codes.

Ability to:
Conduct inspections to ensure compliance with City ordinances and building codes
Conduct plumbing inspections, write technical reports effectively, and use available information to make good code interpretations.
Read and interpret construction document plans, maintain regulatory records, and prepare and submit reports.
Recognize deviations from code requirements and from established policies and procedures, interpret and resolve code issues or questions
Gather and input information relative to the inspections performed into the City's computer permitting software and maintain composure under stress.
Communicate effectively with contractors, city officials, staff members, state and county agencies.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability or political affiliation.
