This is highly responsible, varied and complex telecommunications work, requiring the ability to multitask in responding to emergency and non-emergency requests for service and assistance from the general public and emergency personnel in the field, through the use of the computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system, Motorola Gold Elite Radio Dispatch System, and other resources.

Work involves responsibility for receiving requests for fire/medical or police services or for information, and promptly and efficiently dispatching personnel and equipment in response to emergency calls or providing requested information. Duties include receiving requests for assistance from police officers and fire personnel in the field, processing their requests, and providing them with the resources to accomplish their tasks, which may include the operation of a fire/medical and police Emergency 911 system, radio and recorders, computer terminals, and the periodic testing of communications equipment. Disposition of calls is made in accordance with established procedures; however, an employee in this class must exercise good judgment, make immediate decisions, and know Miami's local government operations, the fire or police protection system, and the geographical layout of the City. Supervision and assignments are received from a superior in charge of the shift, both orally and in writing, and work is reviewed by observation, monitoring of the employee's operation, and the review of reports and records.

Essential Functions

Dispatches personnel and equipment for emergency service through use of radio and computerized or other types of communication equipment as assigned.
Maintains contact with all assigned police/fire units to determine status, their location, and availability.
Updates information into the dispatched call, provided by the field units, utilizing computer-aided dispatch system.
Evaluates the need for police/fire units by determining the needs of the public and geographical location, in cases where adjacent municipalities are involved.
Coordinates all requests from field units while simultaneously informing supervisors of all circumstances and maintaining communication of all personnel, throughout incident, to ensure personnel safety and respond to additional needs.
Provides assistance to emergency personnel requesting information such as traffic stops, felony stops, or additional resources.
Responds to inquiries from police and fire agencies, ambulance companies, hospitals, towing companies and the general public.
Trains new Emergency Dispatchers.
Performs other related work as required.

Initial Minimum Requirements

Option 1:

  • Education:
    A high school diploma or equivalent.
AND

  • Work Experience:
    Six (6) months of experience receiving and processing telephone calls - preferably of an emergency nature.


Option 2:

  • Education: A high school diploma or equivalent.
AND
  • Certification: 911 Public Safety Telecommunicator Certification


WRITTEN EXAMINATION: Applicants who meet the initial minimum requirements will be emailed information regarding the exam. Applicants are required to pass the written examination in order to be placed on the Eligible List. The Emergency Dispatcher Written Examination consists of the following components:

  • Call Summarization 2 MT
  • Reading Comprehension
  • Prioritization
  • Map Reading (Urban)

Eligible applicants will be notified by email of the dates and times available for the written examination. If you meet the initial minimum requirements but do not receive a notification, you must email the recruiter at rdabalsa@miamigov.com by February 26, 2024. SELECTION STEPS: In addition to meeting the initial minimum requirements, and passing the written examination, all applicants may be subject to the successful completion of the following criteria to be considered for an appointment: stringent background investigation including criminal records check, fingerprint check, polygraph examination, toxicology screen and, a post-offer medical examination.

Note #1: This position requires shift work, which includes weekends and holidays as well as on-duty assignments during natural disasters. Applicants may be assigned to any shift for an indefinite period of time. Beginning Emergency Dispatchers will most likely be assigned to the midnight or afternoon shift after training is complete.

Note #2: The 911 Public Safety Telecommunicator certification must be obtained within twelve months from the date of hire and must be maintained valid throughout employment.

Note #3: Emergency Medical Dispatcher and Emergency Fire Dispatcher Certifications must be obtained within the first three (3) months from the date of hire and must remain valid throughout employment.

Note #4: All candidates must demonstrate the ability to speak English in a clear, well-modulated voice using good diction. Bilingual in English and another language is preferred.

Documentation Requirements

Foreign diplomas/degrees must be submitted with a credential evaluation report from an approved credential evaluation agency*. Translations of diploma/degrees are not accepted. If degree/diploma does not reflect the academic major on its face, transcripts indicating degree completion must be submitted. Audit/Academic reports are not accepted as substitutions for college transcripts.
  • Approved Credential Evaluation Agencies:
Credential evaluation reports showing the United States equivalency for academic credentials earned in other countries may be provided by:
  • An accredited four-year college or university in the United States, OR
  • A current member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES), OR
  • A current member of the Association of International Credential Evaluators (AICE), OR
  • A recognized Professional Organization

B. Valid Florida Driver License or State-issued Identification
C. Property Tax Statement dated within 1 year of the date of submission
D. Properly executed valid lease agreement
