What are the responsibilities and job description for the OCEAN RESCUE LIFEGUARD, PT position at City of Miami?
Work involves responsibility for maintaining orderly behavior on the part of swimmers at a City beach, protecting swimmers from injury or loss of life by drowning, and for rescuing those who might be in distress. Work is performed on an assigned shift which may vary. Duties include patrolling and observing beach to ensure appropriate use by patrons, enforcing beach regulations, and responding to emergency situations. Work is performed independently in accordance with established procedures, and is subject to review through visual observation and inspection by a supervisor.
Applicants must be 18 years of age at time of application.
A high school diploma or its equivalent and six (6) months experience as a lifeguard. Beach or ocean lifeguard experience is preferred. Must be able to pass the City of Miami’s performance test, which may include swimming, running, and simulated rescue exercises. Additionally, the following certificates must be possessed at time of application and maintained current throughout employment: Lifeguard Training, First Aid, and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer. A Valid Driver's License from any state (Equivalent to a State of Florida Class E) may be utilized upon application, however prior to appointment a State of Florida Driver's License (Class E or higher) must be presented to the Department of Human Resources and must be maintained current throughout employment.
OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience beyond a high school diploma or its equivalent and six (6) months of the required experience.
A State of Florida Department of Health Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification is highly desirable.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
A First Responder Certificate or an Emergency Medical Response Certification issued by the American Red Cross or other nationally recognized certifying agency must be obtained within the first 30 days of employment and maintained current throughout employment.
SPECIAL NOTE:
Employees in this classification will be required to work various shifts, to include nights, holidays and weekends.
Candidates will be subject to a Level II background screening.

Credential evaluation reports showing the United States equivalency for academic credentials earned in other countries may be provided by:
- An accredited four-year college or university in the United States, OR
- A current member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES), OR
- A current member of the Association of International Credential Evaluators (AICE), OR
- A recognized Professional Organization
Toxicology: Prospective employees may be required to submit to toxicology, medical and background screening.
