Position Summary
Under the supervision of the NPD Office Manager, the School Crossing Guard is responsible for providing safe movement of children walking to and from school, while crossing public streets and intersections by observing gaps in the traffic flow. The employee in this position will not provide traffic direction or control at any time. The employee will be responsible for working approximately two hours per day, Monday through Friday, during the public-school year, when school is in session (August – May).
Essential Functions:
- Requests school children to wait at curbing for safe crossing;
- Halt traffic by hand signals or handheld stop sign giving due consideration to the distance required to stop and the avoidance of unnecessary traffic congestion;
- Escort children safely across the street;
- Signal for traffic to resume;
- Report persons seen loitering around schools for extended periods to the Police Department or school personnel;
- Report inappropriate behavior or situations to the Police Department or school personnel.
Position Requirements:
Experience: One to three months related experience and or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Education: High school diploma or GED preferred.
Skills: Good oral and written communication skills are necessary.
Problem Solving: Limited problem solving exists in this position. Reporting inappropriate behavior or situations to the appropriate authority is necessary.
Decision Making: Decisions include determining the best time to stop the flow of traffic to allow the children to safely cross the street.
Accountability: Employee is responsible for arriving on time to their designated area to assist children arriving at school.
Supervision: Employee does not have supervisory responsibilities. Supervision is provided by the Support Services Lieutenant.
Personal Relations: Frequent contact with the general public.
Working Conditions: Adverse weather conditions may exist at times.
Physical Requirements: The School Crossing Guard physical job demands require occasional maximum lift of 5 lbs floor to waist; occasional horizontal push/pull force; frequent overhead reach; frequent hand coordination; frequent foot coordination; frequent sit; frequent stand and frequent walk.
