About This Position

The Public Works Department strives to improve the quality of life in Phoenix through the efficient delivery of outstanding solid waste, fleet, facilities, and energy management services.

The Public Works Department is looking for qualified candidates for the Equipment Operator II position. This position performs a variety of manual and semiskilled tasks associated with the delivery and repair of refuse containers. Employees are responsible for the receipt and inventory of all containers and associated parts and operating equipment necessary for the delivery, disposal, and repair of containers. Additionally, the Equipment Operator II will safely and efficiently operate light automotive equipment for the City.

Equipment Operated Includes

  • Pickup, dump, and flatbed trucks.
  • Vans, trailers, and mechanical sweepers.


Work Ordinarily Follows An Established Routine And May Include

  • Clerical and warehouse inventory duties in addition to equipment operation.
  • Equipment troubleshooting, scrubber operations, and fuel spill cleanup.
  • Working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions exposed to the elements.


IDEAL CANDIDATE

Knowledge of Phoenix metro address system, hundred blocks, and basic navigational directions.

SALARY

Hiring Rate: $19.54 per hour.

Pay Range: $18.60 to 31.82 per hour.

  • Pay range is the entire compensation range for the position classification.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completion of a departmental training course (certified by Personnel) for equipment being tested.
  • OR be qualified for "out-of-class" pay as an Equipment Operator II.
  • OR log 120 hours on equipment being tested for.
  • OR have a minimum of two years of experience operating commercial equipment under two tons, six months of which must be operating on the same or related type of equipment performed by Equipment Operators II.
  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
  • Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record.
  • May require:
    • Working irregular hours, second and/or third shifts, weekends, holidays, and evenings.
    • Moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
    • Working outside in a variety of environmental extremes such as heat, cold, rain, air pollution, and dust.

  • These positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

Preferred Qualifications

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

Experience With

  • Operating light duty equipment, including box truck with lift gate operations, 5th wheel truck and trailer combination, water trailer, and/or other vehicles.
  • Delivering services per routed instructions.
  • Tracking and asset control responsibilities.
  • Electronic GPS devices / systems that provide electronic navigational directions of local areas.
  • Solid Waste industry.
  • Providing customer service in person to provide guidance to residential customers regarding concerns about solid waste issues, or any other customer service.
