Essential Job Functions:
The following list is not intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by employees in this classification, it is only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities you may encounter. • Acts as paramedic for emergency care; provides advanced life support services including invasive and non-invasive medical procedures and treatments.
• Performs assigned duties within their scope of authority and training according to PPFD and Best EMS policies and SOG's.
• Inspects, maintains, and assures operational readiness of PPFD facilities, equipment, apparatus, and tools; notifies supervisors of equipment problems.
• Responds to emergency calls for service, performs fire suppression, rescue and emergency medical duties as required to control emergency incidents.
• Operates Fire, Rescue, Medical and life saving tools, equipment, and apparatus.
• Wearing personal protective ensemble and SCBA, performs fire-fighting tasks, rescue operations, and other emergency response actions under stressful conditions, including working in extremely hot or cold environments for prolonged time periods.
• Wear an SCBA, which includes a demand valve-type positive-pressure face piece or HEPA filter masks, which requires the ability to tolerate increased respiratory workloads.
• Climbs multiple flights of stairs while wearing fire protective ensemble weighing at least 50 lbs. or more and carrying equipment/tools weighing an additional 20 to 40 lbs.
• Performs critical, time-sensitive, complex problem solving during physical exertion in stressful, hazardous environments, including hot, dark, tightly enclosed spaces, that is further aggravated by fatigue, flashing lights, sirens, and other distractions.
• Must be able to communicate (give and comprehend verbal orders) while wearing personal protective ensembles and SCBA under conditions of high background noise, poor visibility, and drenching from hose lines and/or fixed protection systems (e.g., sprinklers).
• Works in shifts, including nighttime and holidays, that can extend beyond 24 hours.
• Attends training programs to continuously update work skills and knowledge.
• Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Education and Experience
High School diploma or GED

Required Licenses or Certifications:
A valid Class "B" exempt Texas Driver's License within twelve (12) months of employment. Firefighter / Paramedic: TCFP Basic Fire Certification / DSHS Licensed or Certified Paramedic
Paramedic only: DSHS Licensed or Certified Paramedic (Certification of Firefighter Basic from the Texas Commission on Fire Protection within 1 year of appointment). Firefighter / EMT-Basic: TCFP Basic Fire Cert. / DSHS EMT-Basic cert. (Must be enrolled or currently in Paramedic school) Additional technical certifications and training may be required.

Required Knowledge of:

• City organization, operations, policies, and procedures by end of probation.
• Fire Dept. SOG's, policies and procedures by end of probation.
• EMS protocols and medical control policies and procedures by end of probation.
• City geography, traffic patterns and the location of all streets, landmarks, and buildings.

Required skill in:

• Providing firefighting, rescue, and emergency medical services under emergency conditions.
• Recognize the construction, contents and occupancy of buildings and other emergency incident scenes to apply appropriate firefighting, rescue and emergency medical techniques.
• Observing and following safe firefighting practices.
• Following orders under stressful situations.
• Assessing complex emergency medical situations, stabilizing patients, and providing advanced emergency medical care.
• Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers and working as a team member with other emergency services agencies.
• Effective communication, both verbal and written.

Physical Demands / Work Environment

• Work is performed outdoors / indoors on emergency incident scenes, and in fire station facilities; requires strenuous physical efforts, and the ability to lift and move items weighing up to 100 pounds.
• Must be able to work weekdays, weekends, and holidays as assigned.
• Exposure to toxic fumes, irritants, particulates, biological (i.e., infectious) and nonbiological hazards, and/or heated gases, despite the use of personal protective ensembles and SCBA.
• Wearing personal protective ensemble and SCBA, climbing ladders, operating from heights, walking, or crawling in the dark along narrow and uneven surfaces, and operating in proximity to electrical power lines and/or other hazards.
• Unpredictable emergency requirements for prolonged periods of extreme physical exertion without benefit of warm-up, scheduled rest periods, meals, access to medication(s), or hydration.
• Must maintain a level of physical fitness to meet Department Standards.
