The Recreation Department of the City of Pittsburg, CA provides programs and services that enhance the quality of life for the community through aquatics, Senior Center, Small World Park, and other recreational activities and events.  The Recreation Department will fill Recreation Leader I vacancies in any of the following areas that have openings such as Events, Youth Sports, and Youth Activities Leaders.  Some assignments may handle rental fees for facilities and meeting rooms. 

Successful candidates will possess the following:
  • Safety Awareness: Demonstrates a commitment to ensuring the well-being of all patrons and enforce facility rules and regulations.
  • Vigilance: Maintains focus and readiness to respond in various situations.
  • Teamwork: Collaborates effectively with staff and supervisors to provide a seamless experience.
  • Customer Service: Creates a welcoming and positive environment for all visitors.
  • Responsibility: Takes initiative and completes assigned tasks reliably; dependable and able to maintain punctual attendance
  • Familiarity with pool safety protocols and water rescue techniques is desired.
  • Current certification in CPR, First Aid, and AED (or willingness to obtain prior to start date).

About the Recreation Department
The Recreation Department provides programs and services that enhance the quality of life for the Pittsburg community through the following:

  • Youth and Young Adult Services: variety of programs for youth and young adults including job readiness, employment opportunities, wellness, and arts and community.
  • Sports: variety of recreation sports leagues, camps and clinics for youth and adults and responsible for field rentals and usage.
  • Small World Park: daily operations of children's amusement park that is open weekends only in the spring/fall and four days a week during the summer.
  • Aquatics: operation of aquatic center including recreation and lap swim, classes, and programs and rentals.
  • Senior Center: various activities and programs for residents, ages 50 to include exercise programs, financial counseling, crafts, special excursions, health management, social events, meals, and wellness.

The Marina Community Center located in downtown Pittsburg provides a hub for Recreation staff and community partners and offers indoor programs and activities for youth, families, and all residents.

The City of Pittsburg is a full-service city following the council-manager form of government. We have about 300 full time employees and about 350 employees total (depending on the season).  Pittsburg is currently organized into the following departments: City Management, Community and Economic Development (Building, Economic Development, Code Enforcement, and Planning), Community Services (Housing Authority, Pittsburg Power Company, and the Successor Agency to the former Redevelopment Agency), Recreation, Human Resources, Finance, Police, and Public Works (Engineering, Operations/Maintenance, Utilities, Facilities, Parks, and Water Treatment).

Activities Assistant: 
  • Assists in the preparation of City events. 
  • Light custodial duties. 
  • Set up, take down and transport equipment for events. 
  • Positive attitude and excellent customer service skills are required.
  • *Position may require a valid California Driver's License for some assignments.
Youth Sports: 
  • Keep records and scores for various youth and adult sports activities. 
  • Scorekeepers must have a general understanding of the sports programs, such as: softball, basketball and football.
  • Supervise athletic fields during activities, such as: youth flag football and youth basketball. 
  • Ball Field Supervisor: training and supervision of subordinate staff. (Requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and one year experience as a Recreation Leader.)
  • Referee: Officiate youth basketball and football games for ages 8-12. Communicate with coaches, parents and players on rules and direction of activity. Must have basic understanding of the game and rules of football and basketball.

Youth Activities Leader: 
  • Assist in supervision of recreation programs.
  • At least one year of experience working with youth in a group setting is required.

Aquatics Assignment:
  • Pool Supervisor: Responsible for assisting the pool managers in the seasonal operation of the Sullenberger Swim Center in: supervising employees, keeping supplies and the snack bar stocked, running in-services, supervising recreational swim sessions, assisting in the preparation of materials, scheduling additional training dates as necessary; assist in running programs, special events and the American Red Cross "Learn to Swim" programs; scheduling and organizing pool rentals; preparing daily and weekly attendance reports, and providing excellent customer service in the context of applying and enforcing rules and regulations that govern the health, safety and welfare of patrons. Requires the possession of a valid and current American Red Cross CPR/FPR, First Aid, Water Safety Instructor and Lifeguard Training certificates. Previous lifeguard and instruction experience.
  • Senior Lifeguard: Rescue swimmers in distress; enforce pool rules; administer first aid, perform general maintenance of pool and surrounding area. Provide instruction and supervision to Lifeguards. Requires an American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Responding to Emergency training. Refined swimming skills and the ability to swim 20 laps; ability to deal with stressful situations. Six months previous experience as a Lifeguard.
  • Water Safety Instructor: Provide swimming instruction to all age groups and ability levels; supervise and instruct Swim Aides; maintain records of student progress; work effectively on a team. Requires an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor, First Aid and CPR training. Refined swimming skills and the ability to swim 20 laps. Minimum age 16 yrs.

4. New Hire Paperwork: After completion of the background/pre-employment process, successful candidates will complete new hire onboarding which includes paperwork, reviewing of applicable policies, and training.
