What are the responsibilities and job description for the Traffic Control Electrician position at City of Pittsburgh?

Installs, removes, inspects, maintains, programs, and repairs electronic traffic control and signal equipment.

Salary:  $24.62 per hour
Union: This position is included in the Pittsburgh Joint Collective Bargaining Committee and will be filled in accordance with provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Union Bid Form: Not required.  Your application for this position will serve as your union Bid Form.
Civil Service Classification:  Non-Competitive

  • A current, valid Class C Pennsylvania Motor Vehicle Operator's License is required to be presented and verified prior to appointment to the position and must be maintained throughout employment.  Written requests for a special accommodation on the basis of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act will be considered by the Department of Human Resources & Civil Service on an individual basis.

QUALIFYING REQUIREMENTS:
Your City of Pittsburgh application will be reviewed and your work experience and education/training will be evaluated to determine if you meet the qualifying eligibility requirements listed below for this position.  You will be sent an eligibility letter regarding your eligible/ineligible status.

WORK EXPERIENCE:  None required for this position.

EDUCATION/TRAINING: The application must clearly show an Associate's Degree from a fully accredited institution in Electronics or a related field.  (See NOTE under the General Application Requirements Section above regarding the verification of education/training).

EQUIVALENCY:  Work experience may be substituted for education/training on a year for year basis if the application clearly shows the required number of years to meet the Total Qualifying Requirement for this position (based on the sum of work experience and education/training listed above).  The Total Qualifying Requirement is two (2) years.  (See NOTE under the General Application Requirements Section above regarding the verification of education/training).If you meet the qualifying requirements listed above, you will be sent a letter of admission (when applicable) for the following examination(s).  You must pass the written and/or performance examination(s) in order to have your name placed on the official Civil Service eligibility list for this position.  Candidates who receive job offers must pass a medical examination (when applicable) prior to start date.

  • Medical:  Required.  Color vision only.
  • Installs, removes, inspects, maintains, programs, and repairs  electronic traffic control and signal equipment.
  • Locates and repairs defective underground and overhead cables and wires; tests circuits (e.g., solid state, etc.) and makes required repairs.
  • Repairs or rebuilds printed circuit boards brought back to shop from field service calls to traffic intersections.
  • Removes tree branches interfering with lines or wires.
  • Performs related construction work as required to install equipment.
  • Installs vehicle-actuated loops in roadways for traffic control systems.
  • Operates personal computer and peripheral equipment to access maintenance files and to upload and download information to and from traffic signals.
  • May direct the work of lower-level personnel at job site on a project basis.
  • Maintains records, both manually and electronically, and prepares accurate reports on service calls and inventory.
  • May work all shifts, weekends and holidays.
  • Performs activities and functions of related lower-level personnel as assigned or required.
  • Performs such other related tasks and duties that are assigned or required.
