Aquatic Center - Lifeguard

*Typical starting pay will be at the beginning of the pay range posted, depending on qualifications.*

Primary Purpose

To ensure the safety of both the public and environment at The Rush – Republic Aquatic Park by focusing on accident prevention and responding to emergency situations.

Supervision

Under the direct supervision of the Aquatics Park Manager and Aquatics Administrator, or as assigned.

1. Maintains an alert position at all times, including keeping unnecessary talk with visitors to a bare minimum.
2. Provides emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services.
3. Always presents professional appearance and attitude and maintains a high standard of customer service.
4. Performs various maintenance duties as directed to maintain a clean and safe facility.
5. Participates in skill development once a week.
6. Enforces all rules and prohibits unsafe activities.
7. Does not leave pool area or station until relieved by another lifeguard or until all patrons are out of the pool.
8. Consults managers when patrons refuse to obey rules.
9. Reports to work regardless of weather conditions, unless called by the manager.
10. Deals effectively and courteously with fellow employees and the general public.
11. Performs other duties as assigned.

1. Attends all training sessions as deemed appropriate by the supervisor or department head.
2. Maintains appropriate supplies for assigned area.
3. Maintains neat and orderly work area.

Education & Experience

Prior experience working in a related position is preferred.

Must be a strong swimmer; Must be a self-starter who possesses initiative and urgency in their work; Must be able to effectively communicate through written and verbal skills; Must have good time management skills; Must have good cognitive and analytical skills; Must be able to handle stressful situations; Must be able to quickly assess or judge situations; Must be able to make decisions under pressure in areas of responsibility; Must have a working knowledge in the basic skills of operating computers; Must be able to make decisions under pressure in areas of responsibility.

Special Requirements

Physical Demands

Performs bending, squatting, crawling, twisting, kneeling, and reaching to ground level and overhead; Must be able to reach, grip and hold; Must be able to walk and stand for prolonged periods of time; Must be able to push, pull, lift, and carry 60 pounds. 

Work Environment

Mostly in an outdoor working environment with exposure to dust and pollen, toxic fumes, chemicals or smoke, contagious diseases, electrical and mechanical hazards associated with equipment, extreme noise; Subject to variety of extreme weather condition; Susceptible to safety hazards associated with working in and around high traffic volume; May work in confined places and awkward positions.

Miscellaneous Requirements

• Will be required to work a variety of shifts including nights, weekends, and/or holidays.
• Subject to emergency call-in.  
• Must be a dependable person due to the small size of the work force.  
• May be subject to random substance abuse testing.
