Description
The Department of Public Utilities Gas Distribution Division is seeking several qualified Gas Maintenance Pipeline Technicians to work within the Richmond Gas Works division of the Department of Public Utilities. This class installs, maintains, and repairs gas pipelines. Work may include: responding to and repairing emergency gas leaks; locating existing underground pipes; installing gas pipes; performing routine inspections and maintenance of gas lines, valves, and pipes; inspecting work vehicles; and performing Operational Qualification (OQ) testing.
Duties include but are not limited to
- Responding to work orders for reports of broken or leaking gas lines and requests for shutdowns to determine the threat to public safety;
- Making gas line repairs in accordance to established Operation Maintenance Procedures;
- Locating the City of Richmond's underground utilities in the City of Richmond and counties of Chesterfield and Henrico;
- Completing and passing all Operators Qualification tasks.
This individual may be required to work overtime, nights, weekends, holidays or on-call, as needed.
Qualifications, Special Certifications and Licenses
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Considerable knowledge of Pipeline service line replacement and repair, Federal and state safety/environmental compliance, Pipeline shutdown valves, Hazmat/PPE protection equipment and safety procedures, Purging small and large gas lines, Corrosion monitoring, Residential and commercial gas meters, GIS maps. Demonstrated skills locating pipelines underground, Verbal and written communication, Inspecting pipelines for leaks, Operating heavy machinery and hand tools, Plumbing, Welding. Demonstrated ability to Follow standard operating procedures, Prioritize, Multi-task, Manage time effectively, Follow safety regulations.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
- Requires High School diploma, GED, or specialized vocational training;
- One year of related experience;
- An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification.
- None required
- Experience installing or repairing gas lines (Residential or commercial);
- Candidate must have a Virginia Driver's License, and the ability to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within 6 months of employment;
- At least one (1) year of plumbing or pipefitting work and/or equivalent combination of experience working on gas lines;
- Experience breaking or cutting asphalt, concrete and earth during the installation, excavation and servicing of pipeline systems and components;
- Experience with filling holes;
- Experience reading Gas/GIS map system;
- Familiar with Miss Utility of Virginia.
