About The Position

The custodian beautifies city facilities by performing a variety of custodial and light maintenance in and around city buildings and facilities. Upon initial training, the custodian is able to perform duties as assigned independently to maintain a clean and inviting space for city buildings, lobbies, restrooms, and other assigned areas.Â

What you will usually do

Responsibilities

Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Performs a wide range of custodial tasks in the care and keeping of facilities, grounds, and areas of the City; sweeps, mops, scrubs, waxes, and polishes floors, vacuums and shampoos carpets, dusts and polishes furniture, woodwork, and metalwork, and washes doors, windows, walls, ceilings and furniture.
  • Cleans and sanitizes restrooms and water fountains; restocks restrooms and ensures sanitary and clean spaces for community use.
  • Assists in the preparation of rooms and facilities for special events, meetings, and conferences; moves and arranges tables, chairs, office furniture and equipment; makes minor repairs to furniture, metalwork and woodwork as necessary.
  • Opens and unlocks buildings on a daily basis and turns off alarms; closes and locks doors and windows at the end of business; observes work safety rules and regulations.
  • Cleans, sweeps, and hoses parking lots and sidewalks; cleans litter from surrounding grounds; reports maintenance and repair needs, and inputs work requests when.

  • Proper cleaning methods.
  • Operation and maintenance of a variety of hand and power janitorial tools and equipment.

  • Proper mixing and diluting of cleansers, disinfectants, and stripping agents.

  • City policies, procedures, and standards.

You have

Education and Experience

High School Diploma, or G.E.D. preferred; AND six (6) months of work experience at a commensurate level; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Licenses, Certifications, And Equipment

A State of California driver's license.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

The employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions and is exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electrical shock. The noise level is usually moderately quiet. While performing the duties of this job, employees are regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to walk, sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Â The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required for this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

The City offers an attractive compensation and benefit package, that includes:Â

  • Health Insurance - Monthly contribution for health, dental and vision premiums:Â Â $715.00 Employee Only, $1,377.00 Employee plus one, or $1,841.00 Employee plus Family. Â A "Health Insurance Waiver Stipend" of $4,000.00 every first paycheck of December for eligible employees who waive benefits.Â
  • Vacation - 80 hours after one year, 96 hours of sick leave annuallyÂ
  • 13 holidays, plus 18 hours of floating holiday time.Â
  • Retirement - California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS). Classic members: 2% at 55 |Â New CALPERS members 2% at 62.
  • Life & Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance
