The Position
Definition: Under general supervision, performs a variety of duties to maintain a safe and secure environment for customers, staff, and the general public in assigned areas and locations; provides assistance in matters relating to building security and safety to assigned City departments, buildings, facilities, grounds, and/or surrounding area(s); provides information and assistance to customers; and performs related duties as assigned.
Distinguishing Characteristics: This is a journey-level classification responsible for performing safety patrol, monitoring, and customer service duties in support of assigned City departments, facilities, grounds, and related areas. Positions at this level exercise judgment and initiative in their assigned tasks, receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.
Supervision Exercised and Received: Exercises no direct supervision over staff. Receives general supervision from assigned supervisory or management personnel.
Duties and Responsibilities

- Patrols the buildings, grounds, and surrounding areas of assigned City departments and/or facilities.
- Provides customer service and information including greeting visitors, answering questions, and providing directions.
- Monitors, explains, and enforces observance of applicable City and/or state policies, procedures, laws, ordinances, rules, regulations, and health and safety standards; reports violations to appropriate authorities.
- Remains highly visible and alert to problematic, disorderly, or unruly behavior and situations; takes initiative to mitigate situations and provides assistance as needed.
- Works to help diffuse difficult situations and if needed, escorts violators or disruptive individuals from the premises.
- Responds to staff calls for security presence and assistance; assists staff with deescalating situations.
- Reports issues and suspicious behavior to supervisors and/or other appropriate authorities; initiates calls and communications with and between the Police Department, City customers, and staff, and cooperates with law enforcement personnel in matters relating to the investigation of offenses and the apprehension of offenders as needed.
- Prepares, maintains, and submits activity logs and/or incident and accident reports and other required documentation.

Qualifications
Experience and Education Guidelines: Any combination equivalent to experience and education that would most likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.
Experience: Sufficient experience in interacting with the public performing customer assistance and monitoring the behaviors and activities of others. Experience with de-escalation highly desirable.
