NATURE OF WORK

This classification involves specialized work in planning, organizing, and conducting a variety of special events.  An employee in this position assists in promoting, organizing, preparing, and leading special events; recruits volunteers; and purchases supplies. This position also, interacts with patrons, and renders first aid as needed.
 
 
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
 
  • Assists the Recreation Supervisor in the planning, preparation, and implementing of special events.
  • Plans/organizes/implements/evaluates special events.
  • Prepares special event fliers, slide shows, and signs.
  • Assists with securing sponsorships and fosters a positive relationship with current sponsors and partners.
  • Works closely with staff and volunteers to facilitate event logistics.
  • Provides on-site oversite during special events to ensure a safe and enjoyable environment.
  • Maintain strong work ethic, including punctuality and reliability to meet division and department needs and deadlines. 
  • Maintains, organizes, inventories, and delivers equipment and materials/supplies to event sites, including periodic inspections to ensure quality condition and operation.
  • Interacts with outside vendors and generates contracts for vendors, special entertainment, etc.
  • Interacts with, and handles issues related to, patrons, vendors, and/or staff to gather feedback and enhance future events.
  • Creates various reports as directed.
  • Assists with managing the special events budget and purchasing equipment, materials/supplies, etc.
  • Participates in the work of setting up and breaking down events equipment, decorations, event space, etc. 
  • May also perform custodial work such as required and assigned.
  • Renders first aid in cases of minor injuries.
  • Performs and coordinates minor maintenance work and grounds keeping duties in order to prevent equipment malfunctions and to provide a clean, safe, and orderly facility appearance; does minor repair work on recreational equipment.
  • Assists in the enforcement of recreation center rules and regulations in order to maintain order and prevent accidents.
  • Performs a variety of miscellaneous duties such as answering phones; preparing correspondence; running errands; making arrangements for rental and use of recreation facilities; reviewing incident/accident reports related to specific areas of responsibility; helping set up tables/chairs; and responding to and resolving complaints from program participants/patrons.
  • Recruits instructors and volunteers; runs fingerprint and background checks as needed.
  • Schedules, disseminates schedules, and supervises staff through monitoring and evaluation of work performance.
  • Works evenings, weekends, and/or holidays to accommodate as needed.
  • Performs related work as required.



EDUCATION
 
  • Graduation from an accredited high school, preferably supplemented by college level coursework in recreation, education or physical education
  • PROOF OF THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF COMPLETED EDUCATION MUST BE SUBMITTED AS AN ATTACHMENT WITH APPLICATION. (Applications without attached proof of education will not be processed for consideration.)
 
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
 
  • Basic work experience in planning, organizing, and conducting a variety of recreational programs for a variety of age groups, preferably with supervisory experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in Recreation will satisfy experience requirement.
  • Bilingual (Spanish speaking) is preferred 

NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS
 
  • Possession of valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Must obtain a valid state of Florida driver's license prior to hire. 
 
 PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT: 
 
Physical:
  • Light to moderate physical effort required, which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials up to thirty (30) pounds. The position requires the ability to walk, stand, and sit for prolonged periods of time. Incumbent must have the ability to effectively and safely operate City-issued motor vehicles.
 
Work Environment:
  • Work is performed in various environments including standard office, recreational facilities, and outdoors. Work hours may vary as needed and may include evenings, weekends and holidays. Tasks are regularly performed with moderate exposure to adverse environmental conditions including inclement weather, severe temperatures and exposure to water. The position may require travel to various locations in the City of Sunrise area.
 Sensory: 
  • The ability to perceive and differentiate visual cues or signals. Tasks require the ability to communicate orally and in writing. Requires ability to adapt to frequent changes in workload and to adjust priorities quickly as circumstances dictate while completing tasks within established time frames. It also requires interaction with employees and officials from all City departments/divisions, vendors and the general public.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
 
  • Knowledge of special event planning.
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of public recreation.
  • Knowledge of the activities which comprise a community recreation program.
  • Knowledge of the principles and techniques of first aid.
  • Knowledge of safety precautions applicable to the area of assignment and effective precautionary measures.
  • Knowledge of department rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the facilities and equipment used in both indoor and outdoor recreation activities.
  • Knowledge of routine maintenance procedures.
  • Skill in using Office and department software.
  • Ability to recognize and prevent dangerous situations from arising during recreational activities.
  • Ability to assist in enforcing facility rules.
  • Ability to keep records, prepare reports, and maintain material inventory.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to use simple hand tools, cleaning materials, and operate a small utility vehicle.
  • Ability to plan and organize workload to achieve stated objectives in a timely, efficient, and effective manner. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively and persuasively, both verbally and in writing. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with participants, other employees, supervisors, other agencies, instructors, community leaders, and the general public.
  • Ability to deal with competing priorities and varied responsibilities.
  • Ability to work efficiently and effectively to develop win-win solutions.
  • Ability to evaluate the impact of alternative courses of action and evaluate circumstances of an innovative, new, or unprecedented nature.
