What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanic - Fleet Services position at City of Topeka?
The City of Topeka's Fleet Services team members are true behind-the-scene heroes, performing preventive maintenance, services and repairs on a wide variety of gasoline and diesel light and medium duty vehicles. They keep our first responders' vehicles running smoothly so they can keep our community safe.
What youll do:
- Perform preventative and minor maintenance, inspection and repair on a variety of different gasoline motor and diesel engine vehicles.
- Assist in diagnostic evaluation and determination of vehicle malfunctions.
- Adjust, repair and replace brake, suspension, fuel, ignition, and exhaust systems.
- Maintain vehicle and equipment maintenance records and documentation.
- Conduct test-drives and maintain tools and equipment.
The ideal candidate:
- Has excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- An aptitude for technology or a willingness to learn.
- Is reliable, with an emphasis on punctuation.
- Has knowledge of and interest in the service, maintenance and repair of a diverse fleet of vehicles and specialty equipment.
Minimum qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent is required; vocational school applicable to the mechanics trade is preferred. Must possess and maintain a valid Kansas drivers license and must be insurable within the standards set by the City of Topekas insurance carrier.
Openings will be filled at the levels below based on qualifications:
Mechanic I requires One (1) year verifiable, full time automotive, truck or heavy equipment maintenance work. Experience can be substituted with the completion of a vocational school program applicable to the mechanics trade.
Mechanic II requires Three (3) years verifiable full-time journeyman light automotive, light truck maintenance work.
Master Mechanic - Must possess Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Master Technician certificate and Three (3) years verifiable journeyman experience in diagnosis, repair and overhaul of gasoline and diesel internal combustion engines and automotive mechanical, hydraulic and electrical system maintenance.
Positions are available on first and second shift with potential for emergency response and call back overtime situations.
Entry rate of pay: $21.00 - $25.48 per hour DOQ, plus $0.75 cents additional per hour for second shift hours.
