Although the successful candidate will be responsible to be able to perform all the essential duties associated with the classification, the primary duties associated with this position are in relation to facility monitoring.
This position requires weekend and evening hours in a public community center. Candidates must be available to work both weekends and evenings and occasional minor holidays. Shifts vary between 2 and 10 hours. The successful candidate could expect to work between 7-15 hours a week.
Opens, closes and secures facility.
Monitors recreation programs and services including but not limited to: indoor and outdoor facility rentals, classes/programs and special events.
Monitors the overall use of the facility with respect to the care and maintenance of the facility.
Observes and directs the use of the facility so that it is used in a safe and positive manner and see that rules and regulations are followed.
Promotes and ensures safety procedures are followed by renters, participants and spectators.
Meets with renters to inspect and document condition of facility before and after use.
Communicates with program leaders and renters as a positive ambassador for the department.
Maintains facility cleanliness by completing cleaning tasks.
Provides high quality customer service to the public and other employees.
Demonstrates a positive, courteous and enthusiastic attitude.
Treats customers with dignity and respect.
Addresses difficult or contentious issues in a constructive manner.
Completes other light administrative tasks as assigned.
May assist in the training of personnel.
Ensures appropriate maintenance security, and safety of recreational facility, activities, programs and Participants.
Ensures compliance with park and facility rental policies and procedures.
Recognizes unsafe conditions and reports to proper authorities.
Performs general clerical and staff functions, including but not limited to: preparing reports, performing activity registration, checking out equipment, scheduling the use of facilities, applying fee schedules, supervising the collection and deposit of fees, maintaining records, answering phones and inquiries, providing information to the public, and various general custodial tasks.
Plans, develops and directs City-wide recreation programs in one or more of the following areas: athletics, camps, disabled/adaptive, social and cultural, environmental, or other recreational activities.
Provides direct program leadership.
Prepares program submittals, evaluations, and reports. Keeps records, requisitions equipment, materials and supplies.
Develops neighborhood interest and participation in programs. Publicizes activities and programs.
Monitors, operates within, and makes recommendations on program budget.
May lead work of recreation aides or volunteers, plan work schedules, make work assignments, and/or provide training.
Plans, develops, organizes and instructs specialized activity classes such as physical fitness, music, arts and crafts, dance and special interest.
Teaches and coaches athletic teams.
Drives participants to recreational activities utilizing city vehicles. Drives to trainings, other city facilities, and vendor sites.
Education and/or Experience: Two years of experience in a related field and one year of experience in supervising recreation programs. Two years of college training in a related field.
Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. Bilingual (Spanish) fluency is preferred.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Computer Skills: Ability to operate a personal computer and related software.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Possession of a valid Oregon driver's license and acceptable driving record, and First Aid/CPR certification at time of appointment or within a timeframe determined by management.

Ability to instruct and supervise recreation programs efficiently. Knowledge of techniques in supervising various recreational activities or specific program activity. Some knowledge of the philosophy and objectives of the recreation profession, and the purpose, use, and benefit of various elements of specific programs. Skill in leadership of several broad types of recreation activities or a specific activity. Personal skills in specialty activities and in their leadership.

The position requires extensive public and staff interaction. Duties of this position will be performed in both indoor and outdoor environments, where there maybe moderate to high noise levels, and differing weather conditions. The employee must possess the ability to work in rainy conditions and navigate slippery surfaces. The employee is frequently exposed to excessive moisture. The employee is rarely exposed to dust, must navigate uneven surfaces and low lighting/poor visibility. Duties of this position require a willingness to work a flexible schedule, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays, and to attend out of town events.
