What are the responsibilities and job description for the UTILITY SERVICE WORKER TRAINEE position at City of Vero Beach?
Under close supervision, performs heavy manual labor and assists in installing, maintaining and repairing water, sewer and reuse water systems; and performs related duties as assigned. The following duties have been provided as examples of the essential types of work performed by positions within this job classification. Management reserves the right to add, modify, change or rescind work assignments as needed.
Some construction or other experience in performing heavy manual labor in an outdoor environment.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:
Possession of a Florida Driver's License. Must possess a Florida Commercial Driver's License, Class B learners permit within three (3) months of hire and license within six (6) months of hire. Automatic promotion to a Utility Service Worker upon obtaining a Class "C" Water Distribution System or Wastewater Collections Operator Certification.
- Assists crews in constructing or maintaining water distribution and wastewater collection systems including the installation of mains, pipe lines, meters, hydrants, valves, water and irrigation meters and related system components.
- Opens and closes valves.
- Restores work area to original condition, prepares road and applies asphalt when construction is complete; repairs sidewalks and driveways; replaces landscaping.
- Supports and actively promotes the City's safety programs. Follows standard operating procedures, observes safety practices and reports potential safety hazards.
- Ability to safely operate assigned power or hand tools and equipment.
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers and the general public.
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- Ability to lift and carry heavy or bulky items frequently (up to100 lbs.).
- Exposure to potential physical harm, infectious disease, extreme weather conditions and hazardous chemicals. Works in trenches and around Heavy Equipment operated by others.
- Must be able to wear personal protective equipment for the position.
- Mud pumps, concrete saw, power valve turner, tampers, generator, shovels, rakes and common hand tools.
