What are the responsibilities and job description for the GIS TECHNICIAN - TRANSPORTATION AND DEVELOPMENT position at Clayton County Government?
PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION:
Performs technical work associated with development, operation, and maintenance of the County's Geographic Information System (GIS) for the Transportation and Development (T&D) Department.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Provides support to users including intensive application training, information, support, and assistance regarding software applications, computer operations, procedures, problems, upgrades, and other related issues. Processes existing spatial data for T&D needs; disseminates to the public via web-based GIS. Assesses the integrity of on-file spatial data; converts to industry-standard file formats; processes data for production in T&D maps. Leverages web-based GIS platform to store spatial data and provide straightforward visualization for T&D needs. Respond to requests from engineers and other related parties regarding mapping and printing of T&D produced maps; maintains standard T&D departmental maps. Troubleshoots issues related to GIS operation and map production. Provides input and performs research on software and equipment purchases. Diagnoses/repairs problems related to application operation and processing, troubleshoots errors with software and other peripherals. Communicates with supervisors, employees, users, other departments, vendors, outside companies, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems. Acts as a liaison between the department and software vendors concerning operation, problems, enhancements, etc. Act as a liaison between other County departments concerning GIS operation and data exchange. Maintains an awareness of new products, trends, and advances in the profession; reads professional literature; attends workshops and training sessions as appropriate.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS:
Conducts field surveys to locate and identify infrastructure elements and to record, measure, describe various data related aspects of the infrastructure. Participates as needed in repair/response efforts related to inclement weather conditions, natural disasters, and other emergency situations. Performs other related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High School Diploma or GED; Associate's or Technical Degree in Computer Science, Data Processing, or closely related field is preferred; supplemented by three (3) years of previous experience and/or training in mapping, GIS systems, drafting, or related field; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver's license. Knowledge of the geography of the county including major roadways, streets, city boundaries, and other elements preferred. Experience with ESRI's software suite preferred.
