PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION
The purpose of this classification is to plan and implement children’s programs and services in the County library. Develops children’s programs to meet the needs and interests of the targeted community; implements programs and evaluates effectiveness; and provides technical and reference assistance to meet the needs of juvenile library users, their caregivers, parents and educators. Provides accurate, friendly reference and reader’s advisory service.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Schedules, plans and presents children’s programs; develops and tailors programs to be age appropriate and of interest to targeted populations (toddler, pre-school and school-aged library patrons); and organizes, schedules and promotes special exhibits and programs.
Visits schools, daycare centers, etc., to present programs and to promote library programs, reading and library use.
Provides reference assistance for children, parents, teachers, and patrons; locates materials; suggests resources in other libraries; advises patrons concerning choice of books or materials for themselves or for their children.
Assists patrons with operating and using library equipment such as microfiche, printers, copiers, computers, etc.
Reviews journals and catalogs to recommend library materials appropriate for pre-school and school aged children such as books, periodicals, audio and video recordings, or other audio-visual material.
Recommends material and/or books to patrons based upon expressed interests and/or questions.
Provides resource material, books, suggestions, and information to teachers, schools, day care providers, etc. based upon age appropriateness, subject matter, interests, etc.
Takes youth groups on tours of the library.
Contacts community groups and businesses for support of special programs, soliciting donations of money and prizes; prepares news releases, flyers, posters, etc. to promote programs; and creates displays and bulletin boards for children’s programs.
Attends meetings of youth services personnel, may attend seminars and workshops.
Performs tasks at the circulation desks, including checking library books in and out, registering patrons for a borrower’s card, issuing new cards, preparing books to be shelved and maintaining records and tabulations.
Enters, updates and retrieves data from the library’s information systems.
Updates patron accounts. Prepares reports, summaries and records of programs provided, attendance, etc.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
Keeps children’s area neat and attractive by shelving books and straightening tables, chairs and puzzles. Sets up tales and chairs in the meeting room for programs. Sets up bulletin boards and displays. Performs other related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
One (1) year of college level course work and two (2) years experience working directly with children and/or teenagers; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Course work or experience in child development, children’s literature, public speaking, storytelling, or theatre and the ability to speak an non-English language are highly desirable.

Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert moderate physical effort in light work, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderately heavy weight (20-40 pounds).
Sensory Requirements: Most, if not all, tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds, and visual cues or signals. Tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions such as dust, wetness, humidity, bright/dim lights, or disease.
