Fiber Optics Program Trainer
The Network Transport Services Portfolio team supports the safety, reliability, and performance of Colorado Springs Utilities’ fiber, microwave, and telecommunications infrastructure. We seek a Fiber Optics Program Trainer to administer, organize, and conduct training for Network Transport Services staff that meets system design standards, regulations, and code.
Key responsibilities of this position include:
- Administering, organizing, and conducting department-specific training for fiber technicians and apprentices
- Facilitating, and updating training courses for the department which may include safety, environmental, and/or technical training content
- Obtaining and maintaining subject-matter proficiency in all assigned courses
- Evaluating the students' abilities to perform new skills or to demonstrate an understanding of new knowledge
- Monitoring training records to ensure employees have met all training requirements for the department
- Creating and updating training materials and programs to align with required standards, regulations, safety, specifications, codes, and appropriate construction practices
- Designing and developing curricula for in-house training and apprenticeship programs
- Developing and delivering communication for training and development policies and programs for the department
- Training new fiber apprentices on safe and efficient pole climbing techniques, safety procedures and gear, climbing techniques, rescue procedures, and identifying defects and hazards
- Updating and continuously improving our training program to ensure we are using best-in-class practices to meet our customers' expectations
Who You Are
- Colorado Driver's License
- Completion of a certified pole climbing school or equivalent
- Five or more years of fiber optic network installation and maintenance experience, or completion of a Colorado Springs Utilities Fiber Apprenticeship Program plus two years of journey-level experience
- High School Diploma or equivalent, Associate degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a closely related field is preferred
- Demonstrated aptitude to learn industry-specific software, regulatory requirements, and safety programs to effectively train employees
- Strong verbal & written communication skills and experience adapting training content and delivery style to various levels
- Knowledge of approved practices, procedures, tools, codes, and materials used in fiber optic cable splicing
- Experience with outside plant cable infrastructure such as handholes and vaults
- Ability to understand and develop metrics to validate training performance
- Demonstrated individual commitment to and personal responsibility for workplace safety
Currently possess or have the ability to acquire one of the following or equivalent within six months of hire:

- BICSI - Installer 2 and Optical Fiber Certifications
- Fiber Optic Association – CFOT, CFOS/O, CFOS/T, and CFOS/S Certifications
- ETA International – FOI and FOT-OSP Certifications
