Common House is a modern social club with locations in Richmond, VA, Charlottesville, VA, Chattanooga, TN, and New Orleans, LA (coming 2024). More than a membership, the Houses provide inclusive spaces to dine, work, and discover through daily programming, unique amenities, and connection opportunities with other members.

Position & Candidate Description

Common House is seeking an experienced hospitality operator to lead the team and manage the grand opening and ongoing operations of Common House New Orleans. The Director of Operations will be the point-person with full responsibility for the overall business and property, leading the team on the ground and liaising with the corporate team and ownership group to ensure a smooth and successful club opening, and that once operating, that financial metrics are met. The ideal candidate is an experienced project manager, people manager, and has the business acumen and financial literacy to identify areas of opportunity and ultimately drive results. Further, the ideal candidate has an entrepreneurial spirit and a can-do attitude, is engaged and connected in the New Orleans community, passionate about hospitality, and adept at stakeholder management.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Pre-Open Responsibilities
    • Work closely with COO to run weekly team meetings and oversee all necessary pre-open activities, from membership and private event sales driving to hiring, ordering smallwares, obtaining permits, etc.
    • Partner with OpCo Membership Director to oversee the growth of the CH NOLA Membership base
      • This may look like: Identifying key businesses, nonprofits, and other local organizations in the area to pitch on Corporate Membership packages, partnerships, and other engagement opportunities; identifying promotional ideas or ways to drive brand exposure and convert memberships
    • Partner with OpCo Private Events Director to co-manage the CH NOLA Private Events Manager to meet outreach and solicitation goals, drive leads and sign contracts to meet private event revenue goals
    • Work in partnership with Common House corporate team (OpCo) leads to hire and manage the New Orleans team.
      • Run point on interviewing, hiring, onboarding, and training a growing team
      • Provide coaching and mentoring to New Orleans-based team-members (who may also report to Directors based in Charlottesville/Richmond)
    • Liaise regularly with construction team, real estate project managers, investors, and key stakeholders of Memoir (adjacent apartment building) to ensure there is transparency and collaboration as we work towards grand opening
    • Run point on getting any necessary licenses and permits to operate (liquor license, health department, necessary building inspections, etc.)

  • Post-Opening Responsibilities
    • Own the P&L
      • Work with C-Suite and OpCo team to analyze trends, create market-specific strategies and execute on them to achieve revenue goals
      • Work with team to manage labor and other unit-level expenses, staying in line or under budget with full unit-level P&L responsibility
      • Continuously review the budget and appropriately reduce expenses if revenue goals are not being met
      • Regularly review vendors to ensure the club is getting the most competitive pricing
    • Build and oversee growth and performance of the management/administrative team
      • Work in partnership with Common House function leads to interview, hire, onboard, and manage new full-time salaried hires
      • Provide coaching, mentoring, and direct feedback to team-members (who may be supervised by/work closely with OpCo function leads)
    • Oversee growth and health of Membership Base
      • In partnership with OpCo Director of Membership, manage the Club’s Membership Manager, ensuring that they meet and exceed membership goals (increasing new memberships via proactive outreach, managing/mitigating attrition, monitoring and increasing member utilization)
    • Oversee growth and performance of Private Event Business
      • In partnership with OpCo Private Events Director, manage the Unit-level Private Events Manager/team to ensure we’re on pace to meet revenue projections, and that the member/guest experience meets Common House brand standards of execution
    • Oversee the broader team to ensure and maintain the Member and guest experience
      • Oversee Programming Managers, Concierge Managers, General Managers, Chefs de Cuisine, etc., working with them to hit their department goals, increase member retention, adjust operations based on feedback, etc.
        • Work with Club Managers to ensure all day-to-day operational needs are met and resources are provided, including ensuring that maintenance and facilities needs are addressed, managed, and rectified in a timely manner.
        • Ensure that F&B inventory management, COGS, and quality control are within brand standards
      • Proactively meet with Brand & Communications leads to ideate marketing strategies to help support financial objectives
    • General Management
      • Conduct weekly team meetings to review event sales, membership growth, club and community initiatives, restaurant costs, and all other happenings
      • Attend regular meetings with ownership groups/investors to speak to the ongoing activity, financial performance, and updates of the club.
      • Check in regularly with the CH OpCo Leadership team, reporting on KPIs, elevating any concerns or obstacles, and advocating for necessary resources.
      • Set and enforce expectations for brand standards and company policies through leading by example and delivering regular, direct feedback to all team-members.
      • Ensure maintenance needs (including preventative maintenance schedules) are being met by working directly with dedicated Property Management
      • Identify CAPEX priorities and conduct any needed cost/benefit analysis to provide an ROI for CAPEX requests
      • Ensure necessary licensing, permits, general business records are maintained
      • Work with HQ to roll out systems, policies, procedures, standards; executing the vision of Common House while building team morale and culture
