The Bureau of Hearings and Appeals (BHA) within the Department of Human Services (DHS) provides administrative hearings for all appellants aggrieved by decisions made by DHS and other departments under its jurisdiction.

We are seeking an Attorney Examiner to join our Western Region team located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to serve citizens by conducting administrative hearings in a fair, unbiased, and timely manner.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
As an Attorney Examiner, you will p erform supervisory and quasi-judicial work in the adjudication of appeals involving a broad range of DHS program regulations. You will be responsible for conducting and adjudicating recipient and non-recipient appeals in a variety of subject matters, as well as review the work of Human Services Hearing Officers for conformity to established laws, policies and procedures. You will also c onduct pre-hearing conferences and issue subpoenas, Orders and Rules to Show Cause, and rules on motions. This role requires effective communication to interface with a ppellants, attorneys, representatives, and agencies. In addition, you will conduct quarterly meetings, track the status of case assignments, and t rain newly assigned hearing officers.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment, 37.5 hours per week
  • Work hours are 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 60-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, upon successful completion of the probationary period and training period. Work assignments will primarily take place in the office. However, telework may be available based upon individual eligibility and the operational needs of the Bureau. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Pittsburgh.
  • Salary: The starting salary is non-negotiable.

Required Experience, Training & Eligibility
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Two years of professional legal work which includes one year of trial work experience; and a Juris Doctor degree from an American Bar Association accredited law school.

Special Requirements:

  • You must be in possession of a certification of current license and active admission in good standing to the Bar of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania.
