What are the responsibilities and job description for the Family advocate position at Community Action Partnership of San Luis Obispo County?
We are seeking a dedicated bilingual Family Advocate to join our Services Affirming Family Empowerment (SAFE) team. In this role, you will coordinate referrals, participate in School Student Study Team and weekly case management meetings, conduct needs assessments, and provide early intervention through in-home support.
Your work will focus on prevention and early intervention, helping families achieve self-sufficiency. By providing direct services to clients and their families, you will support CAPSLO’s mission and make a meaningful difference.
We would love to hear from someone who :
- Family Advocate I : Has a Bachelor’s Degree in Child Development, Family Studies, Psychology, Social Work, Health Education, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Family Advocate II : Has a Bachelor’s Degree in Child Development, Family Studies, Psychology, Social Work, Health Education, and two years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Has a valid California Driver’s License, a reliable vehicle available for business use (mileage reimbursed), and an acceptable driving record.
- Is bilingual / biliterate in English and Spanish. An exam will be administered prior to employment.
As a Family Advocate you will :
- Facilitate entry of eligible children into the SAFE programs and orient parents to the goals and objectives of SAFE.
- Support SAFE families by identifying problems and concerns, linking families with appropriate referral systems and services, and following up to ensure services are received.
- Participate in comprehensive family needs assessments to develop family case planning, ensuring the multidisciplinary team obtains necessary information.
- Under the supervision of the Site Coordinator and in collaboration with SAFE partners, provide case management services to support daily living skills and social skills development.
- Provide continuous one-on-one case management to implement health, nutrition, school completion / equivalency, child development, and parenting goals.
- Facilitate support groups and parenting classes.
- Network with related agencies to link clients to community resources.
- Obtain pertinent medical and education information, including attendance and achievement data, for documentation of special needs children, while maintaining confidentiality.
- Conduct regular home visits to foster communication and develop trusting relationships with families.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications :
- Must be at least 18 years of age by date of hire.
- Must comply with the CAPSLO COVID-19 Vaccination Policy, either being fully vaccinated or sign a COVID-19 vaccination declination form.
- Based on program, a current TB skin test / Chest X-Ray may be required.
- Employment is contingent upon meeting all applicable job requirements and background requirements. A criminal history clearance is required prior to employment.
- Upon hire, agency staff will check the Megan’s Law (or the current sexual predator website) to ensure each staff being hired is clear for employment.
Agency staff will check the website annually to ensure all program staff are cleared to work.
