What are the responsibilities and job description for the Direct Support Professional (Support Tom) position at Community Vision?
Pay: $24.50/hr.
Location: Sherwood, OR
Weekend Schedule: 4pm Friday - 4pm Sunday (40 hours paid; see sleep deduction below*)
Brief Description: Tom is a an active, middle-aged man who likes to go on hikes, swim at his local community center, take day trips to the beach, and explore his expansive 60 acre property of fruit trees and rolling hills. Remaining connected to his family is very important to his well-being. He has a roommate of 25 years who is his paid caregiver during the evenings. There are no pets in the home. Tom owns his own vehicle which staff use to transport him.
Tom has a great sense of humor and gets along well with people who are engaging, confident, and have a calm, grounded nature. While Tom doesn't speak verbally, he knows what he wants and can tell you what he needs using Facilitated Communication and basic sign language. Tom is tall and strong, which can intimidate staff who are unfamiliar with the types of supports he needs. Tom benefits from staff who are able to be firm, direct, compassionate, and patient. Supports Include:
- Provide safe and reliable transportation (Tom owns his own vehicle but needs staff to drive him)
- Provide some assistance with direct care (bathing, dressing, eating, taking medication, etc.)
- Provide partial assistance with house-keeping (disinfecting, sweeping, laundry, washing dishes, etc)
- Provide full assistance with meal preparation (cook using kitchen utensils and appliances, etc.)
- Learn to provide partial assistance with use of Facilitated Communication device
- Follow behavior support plan to ensure Tom can live the life he wants and chooses!
- Ability to push, pull, lift up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to walk up to 5 miles at a time (Tom likes to hike and swim)
- 2-3 years’ experience providing direct support to people with developmental disabilities
- Effective drivers' license (Staff are required to drive Tom in a vehicle that Tom owns)
- CPR/First Aid Certification (CV provided training)
- OIS Certification (CV provided training; previous experience preferred)
- Approved Background Check through DHS (CV will process upon hire)
- Be at least 18 years old and legally able to work in the United States
- Must not be on the OIG List of Excluded Individuals

For each 24-hour shift, CV expects employees to have uninterrupted time to sleep through the night. Typically, an employee will have 8 hours of time to sleep and 4 of those hours will not be paid (i.e., sleep deduction). This means in a 24-hour period, the employee will be paid for 20 hours of time worked and will be allowed to sleep for up to 8 hours. For this position, the employee will be at the individuals home for 48 hours and will take two 4-hour sleep deductions, thus earning 40 hours of paid time each weekend.
