What are we looking for in a Peer Recovery Support Specialist?

The role of the Peer Recovery Support Specialist is to provide outreach and support to assist individuals who are experiencing addiction to opioids or an overdose crisis. Peer Recovery Support Specialists should be outgoing and comfortable in all settings, as establishing connections with local emergency departments, shelters, and encampments is a crucial aspect of this role. The Peer Recovery Support Specialist will develop trust and rapport in these communities, with the goal of connecting individuals to treatment and housing resources to help meet their recovery goals. By sharing their own experiences with behavioral health issues, treatment, and recovery, Peer Support Specialists encourage and support clients to engage with treatment and take an active role in their recovery. This position requires strong interpersonal skills to quickly build rapport with clients, along with comfort working outside of an office setting and willingness to travel locally each day.

Peer Recovery Support Specialist Duties May Include

  • engaging and developing a relationship of trust with opioid-dependent individuals in the community, including visiting local hospitals, shelters, encampments, and other areas
  • establishing rapport and building motivation by sharing one’s own personal experiences with substance use disorder and recovery
  • sharing resources and referrals for local housing and treatment programs
  • supporting the safety and well-being of individuals with substance use disorders by encouraging recovery
  • assessing clients for safety and risk to self or others, and taking appropriate crisis intervention measures when indicated
  • completing all required documentation in a timely manner

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Must be a self-identified consumer of substance use disorder treatment services in stable recovery for at least one year
  • Eligible for Peer Counselor certification provided by the Washington State Healthcare Authority:
