Job Summary
The Environmental Service Technician Registry is responsible for cleaning the assigned areas throughout the John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital. Applies the 10-Step cleaning process utilizing approved cleaning equipment, chemicals, supplies, and methods to maintain a safe, clean, and attractive environment for patients, guests, and staff. Provides a high quality of care, service, and kindness toward all patients, staff, physicians, volunteers and guests. These duties are to be performed in a highly confidential manner, in accordance with the mission and values of Cook County Health & Hospitals System (CCHHS).
This position is exempt from Career Service under the CCHHS Personnel Rules.
Typical Duties
- Follows the 10-step cleaning process to support disinfection and sterilization through the hospital.
- Ensures appropriate caution/safety signs are properly set up prior to performing cleaning duties.
- Cleans floors including sweeping, dusting, damp/wet mopping, and disinfecting.
- Cleans windows/mirrors in patient rooms, bathrooms, and other assigned areas.
- Cleans, washes, sanitizes and/or polishes bathroom fixtures, also ensure water marks are removed from fixtures.
- Cleans/polishes furniture and shelves in assigned rooms and other areas as instructed.
- Cleans walls by wiping, dusting, spot cleaning, and disinfecting.
- Ensures work/cleaning schedules are followed and all accidents/incidents are reported.
- Adheres to established infection control and universal precautions.
- Keeps work areas free of hazardous objects such as protruding mop/broom handles, unnecessary equipment, supplies, etc. Also, will ensure all equipment is stored at least 6 inches from the floor and 18 inches from the ceiling.
- Maintains confidentiality of all patient information.
- Performs other duties assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED is required (proof must be provided at time of interview)
- Two (2) years of cleaning experience in environmental services within a healthcare environment is required

- Knowledge and familiarity of the 10-step cleaning process
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills necessary to communicate with all levels of staff and a patient population composed of diverse cultures and age groups.
- Demonstrate attention to detail accuracy and precision.
- Ability to respond to emergency clean up requests.
- Ability to maintain professional demeanor at all times.
- Ability to tolerate exposure to unpleasant noise, odor, and temperatures.
- Ability to walk extensively, lift moderately heavy projects, and climb stairs.
- Ability to consistently push, pull, twist, turn, bend, kneel, stoop, lift, reach above the shoulders, and stand for prolonged periods of time.
