SUMMARY:


This position is responsible for operating heavy equipment in a safe and appropiate manner. Heavy equipment may include front-end loaders, dozers, excavators, skid steers, graders, compactors, telehandlers and other pieces of equipment. The Heavy Equipment Operator must operate and maintain heavy motorized equipment used in earth moving in a safe and efficient manner and must be able to interact with clients and landowners in a courteous and respectful manner.


STANDARD SPECIFICATIONS:

To perform this job successfully, the incumbent will possess the abilities or aptitudes to perform each duty proficiently. Some requirements may exclude individuals who pose a direct threat or significant risk to the health and safety of themselves, or other employees.


Education/Qualifications:


Essential:


1. High school diploma or GED.

2. Minimum of three (3) years of heavy equipment operation and maintenance experience.

3. Proficiency in operating heavy power-driven equipment.

4. Must possess valid Driver’s License.

5. Must be able to successfully complete DOT Health Physical.

6. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.

7. Ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees, customers, and general public.


Requirements/Skills:


Essential:


1. Ability to operate required motorized equipment in a safe and responsible manner.

2. Effective verbal and listening communication skills.

3. Good interpersonal skills.

4. Ability to read and write to record to maintain daily equipment inspection reports and daily records.

5. Knowledge of truck and equipment safety.

6. Knowledge of operation of front-end loaders, dozers, excavators, graders, compactors, telehandlers and other pieces of heavy equipment.

7. Ability to work flexible hours.

8. Ability to travel 100% of the time.

9. Ability to work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.


Requirement/Skills:


Preferred:


1. Working knowledge of grades and blueprints.

2. Knowledge of pipeline construction and maintenance techniques.

3. Knowledge of earthmoving and compaction techniques.



JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Operate heavy, motorized equipment used in earth moving operations, including but not limited to front-end loaders, dozers, excavators, skid steers, graders, compactors, telehandlers, etc. and other equipment to support a variety of operations.
  • Be able to excavate a trench and maintain a required depth on various terrains and slopes.
  • Be able to excavate land surfaces using dozers and other construction equipment and restore pipeline ROW’s to specified condition.
  • Gather and load soil, rock and waste from job sites onto trucks. Transport to appropriate location.
  • Use mobile radio units to coordinate tasks and resources.
  • Performs required manual labor in construction and maintenance projects; checks and services assigned equipment. Performs routine maintenance and emergency repairs, reports complex mechanical problems for shop repairs.
  • May assist in loading and unloading of trucks. Laying of pipe, using air tools and jackhammers and other hand tools related to job.
  • Train less-skilled employees in operation and care of equipment.
  • Work independently in absence of a supervisor.
  • Perform a variety of heavy manual tasks for extended periods under varying weather conditions.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:


May manage future subordinate employees and consultants/contractors. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.

The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include ability to adjust focus.


WORK ENVIRONMENT:


While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts, and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential duties of this job. 100% travel to customer locations and job sites.
