About this unit
The CVRU is a fast paced, highly specialized 9-bed critical care unit located right next to the Meijer Heart Center OR’s that is dedicated to providing world class recovery care of patients who have undergone all types of cardiac surgical procedures. Our nurses are fully ICU trained (including on IABP’s, PA catheters, sheaths, ventilators, etc) and provide the complete recovery care needed for these patients until they are hemodynamically stable and ready to transfer to the progressive care unit or to the Cardiothoracic ICU if the critical care needs are anticipated to last greater than 24 hrs. Our nurses work very closely with the cardiac surgery team to make sure these complex patients receive everything they need to assure optimal outcomes.

Summary of Responsibilities
Nurse Technicians act as a team member in the delivery of quality patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN). Responsibilities include taking vitals, checking blood sugars, bed bathing, ambulating, wound care, catheterization and acting as a safety attendant for patients.
Essential Functions:
- Collects and reports physiological, psychological, sociocultural and spiritual needs of patients and families in coordination with and as delineated by the RN or Provider.
- Ensures that required documentation is performed in an accurate and timely manner.
- Provides direct patient care under the direction of the RN or Provider, consistent with clinical policies and procedures, and department standard work. Provides input in the development of an individualized plan of care. Ensures that required documentation is performed in an accurate and timely manner.
- Articulates the nursing technician role to the patient, family and health team members. Provides support to facilitate safe, quality patient care in a cost-effective manner.
- Cleans patient’s environment / work area / equipment and communicates any equipment malfunctions to appropriate department / unit personnel.
- Demonstrates a high standard of moral and ethical behavior. Advocates for privacy, confidentiality and security of patient, staff and organization data.
Orientation and Training
Past the point of the required orientation classes, the role is 1 Night Shift per week. Availability to work Fridays and rotating weekends is important.
Available 2024 start dates occur once per month and are based on successful onboarding into Corewell Health, and availability of our Nurse Tech Orientation Classes:
- February: 2/12,2/13 & 2/14 ASC: 2/26
- March: 3/11 , 3/12, and 3/13 ASC: 3/25
April: 4/8, 4/9, & 4/10 ASC: 4/22
The role will begin with 2 days of training in a simulation center and 1 day of EPIC training with our Nurse Educators. These are prescheduled classes from 8 am to 4:30 pm. Because these classes are prescheduled, you must attend all full days, and we cannot reschedule any of the required dates if you cannot attend. Attendance is compensated, as it is required for compliance. The remainder of your training is done on your unit, during the hours of the position you accepted and is also compensated.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- LIFE SUPPORT\Basic Life Support (BLS) Within 90 Days
- Experience in Hospital Setting is preferred
