DEFINITION
Enforces motor vehicle parking regulations in an assigned geographic area of Los Angeles County.
CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS:
Positions allocable to this journey-level class work under the technical and administrative supervision of a Supervising Parking Control Officer and carry out the enforcement of vehicle code parking regulations, exclusive of moving violations, by issuing warnings or citations for illegal parking and by attaching heavy immobilization devices to vehicles as warranted in an assigned geographic area of Los Angeles County. Incumbents must also report possible violations of other codes or ordinances observed in the course of performing their regular duties to appropriate authorities. Incumbents must also exercise independent judgment and knowledge regarding departmental policies and guidelines as well as applicable laws and statutes governing vehicle code parking regulations.
Enforces parking time regulations by placing identifying marks on parked vehicles, and subsequently checking those marks to determine if a vehicle is parked beyond the legal time limit.
Identifies illegally parked vehicles, issuing warnings or citations where indicated.
Maintains public relations by explaining parking regulations and by providing information concerning routes of travel, points of interest, and distance in accordance with established policies.
Reports emergent situations to the proper authority.
Observes and reports possible violations of codes or ordinances such as those related to health and welfare, building and safety, or zoning to appropriate inspection or enforcement authorities.
Identifies and assists with the towing and impounding of stolen and abandoned vehicles.
Maintains a daily record of all actions taken.
Assists deputies to block-off streets in emergencies, as required.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Six (6) months of experience in the public or private sector involving contact with the public, customer relations, or service to the community.
A valid California Class C Driver License is required to perform job-related essential functions. Candidates offered these positions would be required to show proof of a driver license prior to appointment.
Out-of-state applicants must have a valid license from the state in which they reside at the time of filing. Out-of-state applicants will be required to obtain a California Class C Driver License prior to appointment.
LICENSE INFORMATION: Successful applicants for this position will be required to obtain a copy of his / her driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before being appointed. A copy of your driving record must be presented at the time of your appointment. License must not be suspended, restricted, or revoked. AN APPLICANT WHOSE DRIVING RECORD SHOWS THREE (3) OR MORE MOVING VIOLATIONS WITHIN THE LAST YEAR WILL NOT BE APPOINTED.
PHYSICAL CLASS
Physical Class IV - Arduous: This class involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working above ground on irregular surfaces. It includes those positions that occasionally demand extraordinary physical activity such as those in Safety positions.
County Employees who wish to meet the requirements using out-of-class experience will be considered for this examination. Those claiming out-of-class experience should describe their out-of-class duties in detail in the Work Experience and Supplemental Questions sections of their application. Applicants are also encouraged to submit any supporting documentation such as out-of-class/additional responsibility bonuses, verification of experience documents, and performance evaluations in order to assist staff's review of applicants' qualifications.
SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE
As part of this application process, applicants will be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire. The questionnaire contains a pre-investigative questionnaire which will be utilized as part of the background investigation process to ensure applicants meet the standards set forth by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Applicants who fail the pre-investigative questionnaire will be disqualified and will have to wait twelve (12) months from the date of the disqualification in order to reapply.
This examination will consist of a computerized written test covering checking for errors, reading comprehension, basic computations, vehicle code comprehension, vocabulary and spelling weighted 100%.
THE WRITTEN TEST IS NOT REVIEWABLE BY CANDIDATES PER CIVIL SERVICE RULE 7.19.
CANDIDATES MUST ACHIEVE A PASSING SCORE OF 70% OR HIGHER ON THE EXAMINATION IN ORDER TO BE PLACED ON THE ELIGIBLE REGISTER.

ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION
The names of candidates receiving a passing grade in the examination will be placed on the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months from the date of promulgation. Applications will be processed on an as-received basis and promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.
NO PERSON MAY COMPETE IN THIS EXAMINATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY TWELVE (12) MONTHS.
SPECIAL INFORMATION
SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES MUST COMPLETE A THOROUGH BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION, INCLUDING FINGERPRINT SEARCH. Examples of disqualifying factors include: Any felony convictions; job related misdemeanor convictions; certain serious traffic convictions or patterns of traffic violations (3 moving violations in one year; failure to appear; at fault accidents; suspended license; driving under the influence); poor credit history; poor employment history; substance abuse; anyone on probation.
