What are the responsibilities and job description for the Telecommunications Technician II position at County of San Diego?

Interviews will take place on April 13, and job offers for selected candidates will be made the same day. Candidates invited for interview should be prepared to immediately complete background paperwork, including a 5 year employment history, upon receipt of a job offer.

*In addition to the starting annual salary, Telecommunications Technicians may qualify for a $1.50 per hour for time actually spent climbing telecommunication towers*


The County of San Diego Sheriff's Department is seeking candidates for Telecommunications Technician II with the Sheriff's Wireless Services Division. Telecommunication Technicians service the County's large public safety land mobile radio systems and microwave backhaul networks.

Telecommunications Technician II install, maintain, diagnose, and service a variety of telecommunications systems and equipment such as fixed and mobile transmitters and receivers, multicouplers and combiners, digital microwave radio systems, and various types of digital cross connect equipment including channel banks and digital multiplexers. The Telecommunications Technician II also work on IP-based telecommunications systems comprised networking elements such as servers, switches, routers, dispatch center consoles, mobile data systems, as well as Network Monitoring Systems.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Three (3) years of experience in maintaining, repairing, modifying or testing electronic telecommunications equipment, two (2) years of which must have been with VHF, UHF, SHF (microwave) two-way radio telecommunications equipment, AND
  • An additional year of telecommunications experience, OR
  • An Associate of Arts degree or higher from an accredited U.S. college or university, or a certified foreign studies equivalency in telecommunications, electronics, or a related field; OR
  • Military certification equivalent to an AA degree or higher in telecommunications, electronics or a related field; OR
2. Two (2) years of experience as a Telecommunications Technician I with the County of San Diego, or an equivalent combination of the above.


Notes: Additional years of experience as described above may substitute for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis; OR, completion of appropriate course work from an accredited U.S. college or university, or a certified foreign studies equivalency may substitute for the experience requirement on a year-for-year basis.


WORKING CONDITIONS

Exposure to high frequency noise and radio-frequency radiation including microwave radiation; exposure to noxious fumes; exposure to high voltage; working from antenna towers, ceilings, and other remote places; exposure to hot soldering irons; exposure to adverse weather conditions. These positions are subject to emergency call on a 24-hour basis.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT

Employees hired on or after October 15, 2021, are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 before beginning employment. If you receive a conditional offer of employment, a copy of your vaccination card must be provided at the time of background.

Current County employees hired on or before October 14, 2021, are required to provide a copy of their vaccine card showing they are fully vaccinated, or undergo Covid-19 diagnostic testing and wear a facemask in the workplace.

Employees who work at County locations subject to the California Department of Public Health State Public Health Officer order are required to be fully vaccinated. In addition, booster-eligible employees must receive their booster by March 1, 2022, or within 15 days of becoming eligible for a booster if they are not eligible as of March 1, 2022. If there are CDPH date changes for Booster compliance, employees must come into compliance in accordance with that date.


BACKGROUND

Must have a reputation for honesty and trustworthiness and be a team-oriented worker. Misdemeanor and/or felony convictions may be disqualifying depending on type, number, severity and recency. Prior to appointment, candidates will be subject to a background investigation which may include a psychological, truth verification or other examination or test.

EVALUATION

The names of qualified applicants will be placed on a twelve (12) month employment list based on scores received during the evaluation of information contained in their employment and supplemental applications. Please ensure all information is complete and accurate as the responses you provide on the supplemental application questionnaire will be reviewed using an automated evaluation system. If you are successful in the initial screening process your application will be reviewed individually to confirm that the information you provided is accurate and qualifying.
