The County of Yolo is recruiting to fill one regular, full-time position in the class of Lieutenant at the Yolo County Sheriff's Office.
Definition
Under direction, the incumbent plans, directs, and supervises the activities of a major functional operation in the Sheriff's Office, and to do the related work as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Positions allocated to this classification are assigned overall responsibilities for the supervision of a major functional operation of the Sheriff's Office.
- Plans, assigns, and supervises the work program and personnel in a major functional operation of the Sheriff's Office;
- consults with the Sheriff and other key department employees in the formulation of goals and policies;
- prepares administrative reports and correspondence;
- directs and supervises the investigation of felonies, misdemeanors;
- establishes and schedules assignment of subordinate personnel;
- enforces rules and regulations pertaining to the Sheriff's Office;
- takes immediate charge of activities in a major emergency or in the event of an unusually complex problem;
- coordinates the activities of specific job assignments with the activities of other departmental operations and other law enforcement agencies;
- participates in professional crime enforcement activities;
- coordinates training activities of other departmental units.
Education: An Associate’s Degree (60 semester units or 90 quarter units) or equivalent from an accredited college or university in criminal justice, criminology, police science, or other related field. A Bachelor's degree is desirable; AND
Experience: Five (5) years of law enforcement experience, of which two years must be supervisory experience equivalent to the Yolo County Sergeant class at a California POST certified law enforcement agency; AND
Certification: Possession of the California Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) Intermediate Certificate. The California POST Advanced Certificate is desirable.
Substitution: Additional law enforcement experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis up to the maximum of two years.
OR
Education: Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in criminal justice, criminology, police science or other related field; AND
Experience: Ten (10) years of increasingly responsible law enforcement experience; AND
Certification: Possession of the California Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) Advanced Certificate.
Knowledge of: the principles, methods, and techniques of law enforcement; wide knowledge of criminal law, including the law of arrest; search and seizure, rules of evidence, and laws governing jail procedures; knowledge of modern police identification and record keeping methods; knowledge of personnel administration and the proper manner of dealing with personnel problems.
Ability to: plan, assign, and supervise subordinate personnel; ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action; ability to make independent decisions in the absence of higher authorities; ability to prepare clear, concise, and comprehensive written and oral reports; ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with fellow employees, government officials, and the general public.
